should i be saving up for a sherman filterbank 2, or is there something less expensive that's still good? anyone tried the filters from vermona?

yep, less expensive and very phat indeed is the akai mfc42

The Electrix FilterFactory is apparently pretty decent. I have the FilterQueen, which is the younger sister to the Filterfactory - less knobs, no MIDI. Not as cool. With MIDI and sync'd LFOs, I think I would use this more. Sometimes you can find them cheaply.

i bought the sherman second hand of the old chris mccormatron

and i have to say, it's definitely got it's own sound.

which is a good thing in my book amoungst all this computer plugin tomfoolery.

The Mutronics Mutator is a bit of an animal but its only low pass and is a bit pricey now i belive.

yeah the akai is good as its got independent stereo and mono filters..
they each have thier own inputs but the only trouble is they share a stereo output..

the mutator looks interesting, but so far i'm still leaning towards the sherman. it will be a few months before i can buy any new kit anyway, so i might as well start saving for the one that makes the sound i want.

i guess in the meantime i can experiment using the nord modular. it's filters aren't the greatest sounding, but it does have envelope followers, and i want to try the thing where you modulate the cutoff frequency of one sound using an envelope follower on another.

the idea being that one instr will "sing along" with another, adding glue to the track without adding mud (because the frequencies being emphasized by the moving filter *should* all be in tune).

there is a good example of this on the mutator site actually, but be warned, it's in real audio.

well i put something pretty basic together in the nord modular, and ended up with hours of fun tweaking it. i'm on at 15% patch load so i have lots of room.

all i did was run a synth into the R audio in on the NM, and a drum track into the L audio in. the synth is then sent through a multi-mode filter and out the main outs. the drum track is fed to two envelope followers, one of which controls the cutoff of the synth's filter, the other controls the resonance.

i played a static loop on the synth, and as i faded a drum track in, the synth went crazy, just as hoped. still needs work, but this will definitely keep me entertained for a while. :)

Sweeeet cuz ive been lookin at gettin one but when i read the 'lack of character' thread it got my mind thinkin. Comments like yours put back the smile on me face :)
