hollow sounding basslines (i know you know what i mean!)

its kind of hard to explain, but sometimes i hear fast and hard techno tracks that have hollow sounding basslines.

I know its kind of hard to describe over the net like this and i'll try my best to find a clip of a track that has this, but im almost positive you guys have heard it as well...

its those kind of basslines that you cant really hear, but theyre kind of hollow sounding and muddy up the mix in the lo's intentionally. If added together with nice hi's it sounds sick! They almost sound as if theyre not really there but im sure if you take them out of the track you will notice a huge difference...

from what I gather:

Subbass = just a simple sine wave pitched low enough to fit your description of feeling it (but not too low - eqing out all below the 75 hz mark helps stop it from muddying up your mix). Add touches of resonance and distortion to the patch to see if it improves.

you could also be talking about a hugedelayed reverb on a kick., it gives this all encompassing wash of bass fuzz that if filtered and compressed gives a bassline type effect.

If it is the sub bass ur thinkin off.... make sure u got a full range monitoring system so u can hear it properly. Ive been mixin on speakers that range from 55hz to 22khz and could never quite get that sub workin how i liked.

Now when i work on sub, i use my headphones that have the full 20hz - 22khz frequency range and it has helped me a lot. This could b shite advice though :)

what kind of headphones do you have? i've never heard of any that go that low. my 10" sub-woofer only goes down to 30 hz or so.

Sennheiser hd 25's. They're a dj headphone. Pretty much all the better dj headphones have a full frequency range. Well that's what i read in all the catalogues when i go to the toilet.

The human ear goes down to 20hz so i can't understand why your sub only goes to 30hz.

Network acid, that is very similar to what i was looking for although not exactly. Im just wondering how did you make that bassline? you just add excess reverb to a kick and thats it?

this would also probably mean that if youre mixing down your final tracks, and you want to mute your drums, you would also have to mute the bassline since it is linked to the drum?

If u use the reverb in the aux send don't forget U can us' em pre or post fader thus controling indepen. the "bassline" and the drums!

hey guys,

i think i have found a short snippet although i dont have any of it on me at the moment....

but think of any GUNJACK tracks released on his old sheep material and u will know what i mean.....the new mix he did for the 13th porncut with Varela and Bailey also features this kind of bassline im talking about.
