Techno vs Drum and Bass

yes i know, they are like apples and oranges...right?

How many of you techno people respect drum and bass?

but i was having a discussion with some bloke who really knows what he is talking about, and it kind of made me think that maybe they actually are not that different in a sense.

I mean, if you look at it...they are both based on percussion, samples, loops and basslines, got me to thinking that techno is probably the closest straight beat genre to drum and bass (other than hardcore right...but not many people can tolerate that)

in my city, alot of music is mashed up on the same stage in a single night, and the only straight beat genre that seemed to actually work with DnB is techno.

I cant picture really any other straight beat genre opening or closing for a drum and bass act than techno....house doesnt sound right, trance definatly not, psytrance god forbid...you get the picture...

A friend of mine, a DnB dj, i find that we have the same views on other genres, its just that he likes his beats really really fast and broken, and i like them slower and not so broken...

the reason i am posting this really is just to see what kind of respect DnB gets in the techno community, as they are really 2 different scenes, personally i love good drum and bass, as long as it is not cheesy simple stuff.

have any of you producers out there experimented with making drum and bass?

i'd like to hear some DnB with a heavy techno influence....

I tried once to make DnB. came out sounding like break-beat techno at 80bpm with snares and hats going nuts. pretty aweful stuff...

i love techno, i buy it & i play it but over the last 2 years ive found myself really getting into my d&b.....so much so in fact that this year, 70% of the club nights that ive been to have been d&b......so d&b is getting a big thumbs up from me...i love it... :dance:

i think dnb is great some of the old hardcore influences rearly shine through in the rougher jungle type of stuff, as a dj i play mainly techno, but at home and maybe over the next few months i might diverge into dnb a little. trouble is its hard enough to become a known dj in one style least of all conflicting styles such as dnb and techno. but as a style of music, i love it :lol:

I absolutely love D&B, like techno it's one of them scenes that even though the majors try and infiltrate and commercialise, there's a hardcore there that will shine through. I've bought loads of D&B vinyl lately purely on the quality of the music, ram raiders, pendulum etc... I mean, if the music's got a bit of soul I'm there. Yeah D&B after underground hip hop is up there on my list.

Jungle from arount 1990/91 - the labello blanco stuff and ray keith were just revolutionary. The up-tempo ragga hip-hop blistered along at speeds uphead before and the compression on the basslines were just mind blowing even by Dub standards.

The jazz-step end of drum & bass in 96/97 was a big thing. Goldie and LTJ Bukem entered mainstream culture and in 98/99 Ronnie Size brought everybody 'live' break based trip-hop. Thank god! atleast it released Abba for people with limited interest in music.

Ray Keith is still going and with Ed Rush and Mampi Swift, are the master of the dark TechStep. Highly recommend getting a copy of Ray Keith Presents Dark Soldier or Twisted Individual.

Its all much less formulaic than hard dance and hard trance, imo (no flame intended).

Techno is making key stides the other way into UK Garage with the fusion of grimey techno with urban underground house - i'd advise anybody to check out the 3xEP MarkOne/Plasticman/Slaughter Mob - called "Grime" on Rephlex.

the last live pa i played 5 techno tracks, a booty-tech track, then 3 drum & bass tracks and ended with experimental. i expected the room to turn over when i switched from techno to d&b, but it didn't. i think it's possible to have "your sound" and have it shine through no matter what beat structure you lay under it.

im a big fan dnb people like andy c,fresh,johnb,high contrast there all quality djs and producers i also think there relationship is similiar respect for each other is mutual between the two which is probably the reason that both are found at events

in all honesty i dont particularly know a great deal about DnB. ive occasionally gone out of my way at festivals to watch some of it and i really enjoy the atmosphere in there,proper full on!

ive heard some great sets that seem to be hugely techno influenced,got some cd somewhere and its really industrial sounding,all the sounds of a good techno track.

1 dj which i enjoy seeing is Laurent Garnier who fuses both Dnb and Techno into his sets and it works mighty well!! :clap:

Ray Keith Hell yeah, Also check Hype, Dilinja, techItch of course and labels like Virus, Moving shadow, Reinforced. Renegade Hardware, etc. etc. - stuff as well you hear tons of Tekno influences. Well....as a dnb dj this discussion interests me...
yes the two styles are integrated....but i think a lot of you dont really have a lot of knowledge of the dnb scene and what is currently taking place in it....
the dnb scene is in a bit of turmoil at the moment....
in fact....40 of the scenes top producers/djs actually had a meeting a few weeks back to discuss the future of the scene and the present state....
most agreed that the music has gone much faster and needs to slow down a little....
(average speed 4 years ago 160-170....now 170-180....believe...it DOES make a diffrence!)
the main thing the dnb scene has a 'problem' with right now is 'clownstep'....a term given to tunes by the likes of Baron,Hazard,Zen,Generation Dub,Twisted Individual & co....all of whom have burst upon the scene in the last 2 years....
its bouncy and contains what can only be described as 'wobbles'....
i personally love it and think there is a place for it alongside the jazzy stuff and the dark stuff and the soulful stuff....
the problem is that now if u go to a rave like accelearted culture this is all your likely to hear...ALL NIGHT.....and because tunes become so popular....and djs dont know what other djs have played (you get like 11 djs on a line up) then its very likely you could hear 1 tune 4 or 5 times in a night....
obviously not good for a lot of people....
drum n bass really needs some variety at nights at the mo....
and i think the likes of Calibre,Commix,The Insiders,High Contrast,Bailey,etc are gonna be gettin a lot more bookings very soon....
the really heavy stuff has its own little scene as well....people like Loxy,Ink,Evol Intent,Tech Itch & co....
dnb heads dont really hold much compassion for techno.....i hate to say it but a good majority of dnb heads hold no regards for 'beats'....
they like dnb,breaks,hip hop etc but never really get their heads around music without breaks in it....
me personally...i was into techno b4 dnb so ive got a great love for both of em....as well as hardcore techno,breakcore,idm, etc
its all about peoples personal tastes...

Hmmm.

Played d&b way before I finally made the move to techno, and I still love the music, it has an energy that you just dont find with other forms of dance music.

But..

There are far too many completely f*cking useless d&b djs out there. Honestly, god awful muppets who sound like they have won a competition and somehow ended up being famous. Too many headlining djs do nothing innovative, creative or even show basic competency. Its not enought to just turn up with a box of dubs, and expect that alone to knock the crowd dead. The djs in the d&b scene are piss poor compared to some of the technical skill and artistry found in techno. Marky, Craze and others are notable for their skills but there are still too many london rudies blagging there way into headlining slots all over the country, seemingly on the basis that they were mates with all the big guns "back in the day".

I get frustrated at going raving and finding a club full of 17 year old pikey kids, burbery capped and opened shirted gurning at each other and squaring up to anyone who can be bothered to take an interest. But then maybe clubs are different outside of the south east. I know the situation is a hell of a lot better in Europe.

So d&b itself - quality, but somewhat marred by lazy djs and the inevitable idiots who bandwagon with any type of music "the face" or other pseudo style magazines deem cool.

I'm not averse to playing a bit of drum & bass, like all sorts but like it out nice and dark....renegade hardware etc some amazing stuff on that label over the years.
Used to go to a lot of dnb nights from fruit club 93 onwards but always found techno to have a more positive crowd. I prefer to hear drum & bass at a free party than a club, much better vibe form my experience. And yes I find musically it has a lot in common with techno but at the same time the scenes seem more divided since the post rave days.

a few friends of mine who spin dnb have some records, with techno remixes on them, im sure they didnt initially want it to be techno, by the sounds of it they just made a straight beat remix of the tune and it ended up being techno. i am assuming this just because i picture straight beat versions of alot of dnb to be techno....if that makes sense

on another note...my biggest problem with dnb now adays, is that all the tracks are just getting huger and huger, its almost as if every producer out there is in a compition to make the biggest basslines, with the hugest buildups, and they all end up sounding pretty much the same. they should slow it down a bit, make some tracks that have good rhythm, and not nessicarily giant anthems...

anybody heard of Black Sun Empire? i opened for this act this summer, and it was the best Dnb i have ever heard. VERY techy.

I meet dnb bass head who don't like their techno, or at least 4/4 beats....however at the same time heavy techy stuff has big techno influences from how I here it....from Dylan's Spasm (mentasm sample), Cause 4 Concern, to real hoover sounds and acid sounding stuff...maybe they don't intend to? maybe they do but blanantly has sounds that are similar to techno.

I remember reading an interview with DJ Trace a couple of years back where he said he was massively influenced by techno, and that's what he'd be playing if it wasn't for dnb.

One of the guys out of Universal Project mainly plays techno as well. I got the impression from the interview he had played out a fair bit but if he has it'd be in Belgium, so I'm not sure.

i love dnb whether its ambient or not. the only thing is there is some cheese out there but what can ya do every genre has there cheesy tracks. And i think techno goes very well with dnd and the other way.

I am working on an album with makis t from greece featuring the other side of me where I am producing more electronic trax. one of these trax is influenced from the sounds of d&b with those of techno.

Makis is a big fan of d&b and I of techno, therefore we are trying to combine our styles into this track, may be you can keep track of what we are doing :)

In the meantime I like also a lot d & b but actually I don't follow who is releasing etc, just listen and enjoy :)
