<meta name="Keywords" content="[blah blah blah]">

basically put the most important keywords in 1st. then fill in with buzz words after. things like 'mp3' 'download' etc. about a dozen to 20 words is optimum. each entery should be 1 word long and each entery should be seperated by a comma.

<meta name="Description" content="[blah blah blah]">

a short description of the site. again buzz words will help but as this often appears in search engin results there no point in lieing ;)

google tends to catagorise pages by the actually content of the webpage so make sure the pages your submitting to search engins have a good body of text.

make sure that pages your submitting arnt in your 'robots.txt'. (http://www.outfront.net/tutorials_02/adv_tech/robots.htm)

dont submit pages too often.it often takes 2 week for search engins to get round to spidering your site. if your site appears in the que too often you can get removed from it. thats said, this was the case about 6 years ago so things may have moved along since.

sorry if you've tried all this, its pretty much obvious stuff but i thought i would start with the basics 1st.

all this said, i found on google the other day that one of my sites were high in its results yet i never submitted it and it doesnt have any meta tags, but the site is linked in every post i make on here and about 5 other baords (in my signature)

what i'm basically trying to say is i've come to a conclusion that the number of external links to your site thats found on other sites may boost your results somewhat. but this is purly speculation (although not totally unfeasable as spam sites spider for e-mail addresses so it would be the same basic princibles)

yeah meta tags are 1 aspect. you are right manga that internal & external links are also used by google for ranking. thx for the info :)

Meta tags help, but generally the only way to get up in the rankings of search engines like Google is to just have more people visiting your site! So you'll have to find other ways of promoting it. Google goes on how many ppl visit your site, and how many other sites link to yours.. they don't use Meta tags.

That's exactly how Google works, here's a nice guide to their pagerank system - http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank.html

couplea tips

1 - Submit a listing or two at http://www.dmoz.org and cross your fingers, if you get on here you'll automatically get into the Google directory, and a nice pagerank boost

2 - include title variables as well as alt tags for all content imagery, and make sure images are named with key words and phrases. (don't try to scam it by whacking in loads of spacer gif's though)

eg// <img src="underground-techno-music.jpg" border=0 width=100 heigh=100 alt="underground techno music" title="proper warehouse sounds" />

3- To push key words and phrases, use the words when you post links on other websites, for example

<a href="http://www.blackoutaudio.co.uk">Blackout Audio - Underground Techno Discussion Forum</a>

will get you a better ranking on the important words (stuff that people might actually search for) than

<a href="http://www.blackoutaudio.co.uk">Blackout Audio</a> - Underground Techno Discussion Forum
