i havnt been out east very much, played in toronto in 2002, but that was it. so i dont know much about the east. Except that Montreal seems to get wicked shows on a regular basis.

but i can say that the west really doesnt have anything all that strong. It is VERY underground, which is great in its own way, but we can never see any headliners besides the usual London people like Chris Liberator and Henry and a few other people that come here regularly (not that i am complaining, i love those guys to death) but it would be nice to see some other styles, and some new talent (but it seems that new talent just doesnt sell out here...)

Vancouver and BC area is also really rare for techno, i know of a few people who do techno events out there, but its the same as here as far as i can tell, very underground, and locally run.

I feel as if western Canada has alot of potential, as alot of people here havnt really experienced techno, or their view of it is alot different than what it is actually like now.

I miss the days when Plastic Puppet Motive ruled the Canadian scene, there were some wicked wicked techno parties out there in the good ol' prairies!

I hear nothing but complaints from techno people in Toronto, but i am not really in a position to comment on it.

any other canadians want to elaborate on their scenes? what Canadian artists are pushing it for us?

yes...i know i copied the idea from the american techno scene, im bored, and i know it definatly wont get as big as that thread...im just curious to see where this goes

when i get back from Australia next year, its one of my goals to start pushing the techno scene forward...i know there are alot of great people here who have the same view as me.

KEEP TECHNO ALIVE!

i've got pretty much the same perspective, having played all around western canada, but not in the east.

the house scene is probably the strongest out here. the vast majority of the club nights are house, and we've got quite a few house producers around here putting out records - i hear that Jon Delerious is doing ok making a name for himself in europe.

drum & bass and breaks have been gaining a lot of ground, and there is a strong, though small, psytrance scene. hard house and trance were once king of the hill, but are (thank god) losing ground lately.

but techno is still not so popular for some reason. everyone and their dog comes out whenever richie hawtin comes to town, but if it's somebody they haven't heard of, they tend not to get very excited.

GIJody has a techno night in Vancouver now though. i hope that goes well for him.

I hung out with him a couple of times before he moved to Thailand but I have not seen him since. He apparently came back to Toronto for a bit, however he has since disappeared.

I live in a small area called the Niagara Region, and its brutal for Techno, I use to have a residency at a club down here and everytime i played they looked as if they didnt understand. They really enjoy house though, the more vocal the better, it wasnt my thing really so I left my residency and just concentrate on studio work. Hope someday something good happens. Lots of people in Toronto trying there hardest to have parties.

Niagara Region isn't a great place for techno. Toronto used to have a much larger techno scene between 1994 and 1996, with parties drawing upwards of 5000 people and in 1997 the scene started shrinking slowly. There were still good parties between 1997 and now but they are noticeably smaller. The people who form the techno scene in Toronto now are generally pretty dedicated and work hard to maintain something for the people who want to attend the events.

The scene in Toronto is bigger than the scene in DC, I'll tell you that much.

Yeah, I hear Montreal is the f*cking bomb!

Watch out for the Detroit Underground (DETUND) label from Windsor, headed up by experimental musician Kero, one to watch for on the Canadian and international scene. Also DM from Windsor. There's this crazy idm cat Chad on the label from somewhere deeper in Canada, though I can't remember his moniker.

MissTek is a great hard techno DJ from Windsor.

Windsor's got a little thing going on, though it's a small city, so attendance ranges from moderate to almost ok.

yeah. Most people in the Windsor techno scene know Rich personally and many have worked for him in various regards. It's funny, in Detroit, right across the border, there were too many people to know. But Windsor was always a smaller more family like community. Also, the fact that Rich was banned from the States for years made the Windsor community tighter I think.

hey, that's cool, PPM is where i began djing (sort of) before i was ever a dj i used to go to PPM when it was a club, and later on after high school got into djing. deko-ze was my inspiration for getting into the scene in the first place!

I live in a small area called the Niagara Region hey, that sucks the techno scene there i dreadful as my girlfriend and i may be moving to st.catherines next summer as she has family there.

Yeah, I hear Montreal is the f*cking bomb it totally is. anytime i have ever played there. it's been jam packed. i played for indica's 'sweet leaf productions' crew and one of my most memorable experiences was an event i played for him alongside dave the drummer, aaron + julian liberator, geezer, ddr & rowland the bastard. i was absolutely blown away by the vibe and quantity of people that showed up. the place was packed ALL night, straight through to 10am the next day.

ANDROID: how the hell are you man? do you remember me? we played together a few times, the last was w lab 4 in quebec...and you gave me shit for drinking beer and not your 'wadka!' btw: congrats on all your success w your tunes man. well done!

I used to love coming to Canada back in the day. I used to play Ottawa and Montreal mostly, I never really got to the west at all (I always wanted to come to Vancouver since I was a kid because of the old Nettwerk Records; Skinny Puppy, Moev and Severed Heads. I used to think what a cool city to have a label like that!) I played System Soundbar in TO summer before last; that was a good time too, one of the best clubs in North America

Hey, is the club Aria still open in Montreal? A lot of big names used to play there but I never hear about it anymore. I used to rock Sona but that's gone now, too

Im also from Montreal and let me tell you that this is the place to be. What's so great about this place is the diversity. I mean you can find music from vocal house to techno passing by electro, trance and whatever your heart desires.

In reply to: Alan Oldham, yes Aria still exists and yes they always have internationaly renowed DJ's showing up every week almost, 2 times a week in some cases. Just to give you an idea: Tiesto is doing a 4 hour live set at Aria on the 10th of december, if your into that kind of stuff.

Vancouver is an awesome place to play techno because when there is a show, the parties are jam packed in intimate venues. It is a city that is not big on techno i admit but still it can get decent acts out there once in a while....

Montreal is probably the techno capital of Canada at the moment. It was a pity to see Sona go down after personally witnessing some legendary 12 hour sets from Laurent Garnier.

I heard Aria is picking up alot and most of the technoheads have now migrated to Aria for their quick techno fix.
