This is very sad news. Maybe I am wrong, but wasn't a thread started on here not too long ago about who would take over if John Peel died? And now soon after words he has. Sometimes that kind of irony still freaks me out a bit.

Agree. I remember during the show with Jo Whitely for Glastonbury this year, he muttered to Jo "If I live for few more years to carry on..." regarding his show. I was shocked he said that on live TV.
True legend. RIP.

The saddest thing i've heard for ages... any person who loved music, loved John
everytime we had a smoke in the car, listening to John's show, it'll always feels like we had a extra friend in the car, the warmth and passion he spoke with was awesome, and truley influenced my musical believes, and tastes
The guy was a true legend, and will always be missed

i used to listen to his shows every night while i was doing my homework
he introduced me to music from the Fall as well as many other wonderful and usually bizarre bands
he was one of the only dj's to play punk rock in the u.k. and was instrumental in the discovery of so many independant bands and musicians that he mustve been sent promo records from just about everyone in the world.
he regularly argued with the radio 1 bosses who just never seemed to be able to get rid of him, and they finally accepted his status as absolute music guru , as indeed they should have done from the beginning.
he gave me and chris a session once as halo, and i'll never forget being in maida vale studios and his voice came through the monitors and said
" now if i press this little button here i should be able to hear chris liberator and dave the drummer in our studios.....hello lads are you there???"
i nearly fainted , and chris just kept kind of nervously jabbering.
but we enjoyed every minute of it , while the whole of the collective tuned in to listen to it.
he was one of my lifes constant inspirations , with a fantastic sense of humour , an incredible memory and a wealth of knowledge about every kind of music you could possibly mention.
truly a sad sad day for music fans everywhere.
all my sympathy goes out to his family.

****ing gutted...
I still have the tapes I made of tracks from his shows in 1978-1982, so much of an influence on me, more than anything or anyone else.
The sad reality is sat on my desk, a 12" with his name on it,- ready to go, that's sounds dead selfish but just to hear his voice introduce something I'd done would have made everything complete, that's how much he means to me.
Lost for words.
John, sleep easy - you made a difference...

Definately a huge influence..
I am in disbelief, such a unexpected tragedy.
He helped so many bands and artists make it, he appreciated good music and radio 1 is nothing without him.
You can tell how John has influenced Zane Lowe. But its still not the same.
I so loved tuning in, listening to John Peels relaxed voice, just putting on some crackly old 40's jazzy track followed by some sick bassey srum n bass tune. Madness.
God Bless....

well there's always a silver lining ( no matter how thin)
and todays silver lining is that they have been playing all of john peels favourite tunes all day on radio 1
(they couldn't not really could they??)
and right now i'm listening to holiday in cambodia by the dead kennedys
and that's just the one classic out of many more they've already played
**** i'm gutted man,,i feel like i've lost one of my best mates.

I know, it feels liek a really close friend, it shows how music can bring people together (i know that sounds cheesy but its true)
He helped the 'Specials' become what they did in late 70's early 80's who were are a big influence on me, fantastic ska group. Been hearing loads of their shiz on radio, and lots of jamaican ska. Great stuff.

One of my best memories was when he started to play one Aphex Twin's Didgeridoo but on the wrong speed
In typical peel fashion, politely apologised, corrected it and let the bugger run. As I heard today, they should re-name the 2nd stage at Glasto after him. A fitting way to make sure his name lives on and is not forgotten.

I loved John Peel and everything he stood for. Chrissi and I had the pleasure of speaking with him on the phone and I have to say, I was blown away by his down to earth friendliness and obvious love of music. When I got into techno/house in the early 80's I didn't care about John Peel. But after getting caught by this bug of 'obscure' and 'different' music, I really started to get into his show on the Radio. When he played some of our stuff I nearly died.
I'll never forget where I was and the moment I heard the news he'd died. To me he was the best DJ in England, a true legend. John, I salute you. RIP.
