Hi there !
I`m looking for high quality sound recorder mostly for outdoor recordings (ambient sounds, voices, noises etc). I wonder if someone have some expierence / knowledge on them. Most probably I would like to have a digital one, capable to transfer recorded files to computer via USB. Or at least with optical or SPDIF out.

Hi, does it have to be of extremely high quality?
Would a minidisc recorder (has some slight compression) meet your requirements?

Well, MD recorder would be a good start (althogh I try to focus on flash memory based recorders. sony ?), but in future I would like to get something better, especially for vast timbral, highly multilayered and soft nature/city ambient sounds.

portable DAT recorder
how much compression do minidiscs actually use?
would it be noticable if sampled at 16bit/44.1khz ?

Well it would a bit but not that much , minidiscs use their own compression system which gets rid of information that it thinks you wont notice ,not quite sure how exactly but thats the gist of it.
