you need a midi source in and a midi source out.

IN -------------> OUT

a nice feature for the future of ableton , would be like a usb connexion to link up laptops and sync em all together over usb or firewire.

you need at least one midi in and out on both laptops.

That USB thing sounds interesting.
But you still need a kind of transmitter,
bacause it's not in the nature of a USB cable to work as an IN / OUT thing.

ok, im connecting my midi out, to my friends midi input.

in the sync section of midi preferences it reads that my output is my keyboard.

on his it reads that his input is his midi in port.

we have selected time clock as an option.

when i press a key on my keyboard, his ableton midi messages in the corner flashes.

we both have "ext" selected, but when we both select it we cant play.

when only he has ext selected, on my ableton ext flashes saying its sending clock data but on his it doesnt say its recieving?

help?????

Slightly bizarre, but...

I once saw a utility for sending MIDI over ethernet.

Stick a crossover cable in the network socket of each lappy - the theoretical data transfer speeds would piss all over MIDI.

Anyway, lots of implementation details to fill in - but you get the point.

There's an inherent latency involved with ethernet though unless it bypasses the TCP/IP stack...

I can't recall where I saw this. But, I'm pretty sure I'd stumbled across some software hack program that allowed you to send midi data over a TCP/IP connection. So, you should be able to slave up the machines via a wireless network card. I'll do some research. I can't remember if this was still in discussion stages or if it was something finished.

I don't think this was the one I came across that I was mentioning, but here's one for Mac.
