To be honest I think he gave Upson enough of a chance, he gave him a run in the side and he didn't do that well, he might be doing alright at Birmingham, but if a player doesn't have the mentality to succeed at a big club it doesn't matter how much time you give them. Cole came though and he was up against Silvinho who was a great player for us at the time.

Though I would like to see more English players at Arsenal of course, it's hard to think of many that are good enough though, especially ones we could realistically sign, ie not at one of our rivals.

No it's not, he was given a run in the team! And it was his decision to go, he was never ahead of the likes of Sol Campbell. And Lauren has been turned into a right back, Upson could maybe play left back at a push... And the point I was making about Upson is you have to be able to take your chances at a big club like Arsenal - or have the patience to bide your time at the very least.

He was blighted by injuries of course, but I'm not too bothered about Upson, much as I'd like to see more English players in the team it's on the proviso that they're there on merit, not just cos they're english.
