John Tejada - LIVE [Palette / Poker Flat - Los Angeles]
Shaun Mac [Ice 9]
Admission : e10 / e8 members
**Apologies for last week's late late cancellation from Christian Smith, a
delay in receiving lost records meant he was unable to play this date but we
hope to have back sometime later in the year.**
It's a new month, it's a new guest and this time John Tejada comes to
Ireland for the first time to make his debut at Electric City for what will
be a killer live set. We've been big fans of this operatic-offspring's
output since early releases on his own Palette Recordings and the cult UK
label A13 and we're well pleased that he is finally coming to town.
California-based Tejada [also known as Mr. Hazeltine and Lucid Dream] is
easily one of the most productive DJ/producers in modern dance music. While
most of his colleagues work on establishing a signature sound within one
specific genre, John Tejada works in all genres simultaneously. Whether
house, techno, electronica or drum & bass, every scene gets something from
this multitalent, and Tejada manages to move within each field as if it were
his own. His releases through the years on labels like Moods & Grooves,
Sino, deFocus, Plug Research, Immigrant, Playhouse, City Centre Offices have
showcased his amazingly diverse and always consistent production often in
conjunction with 12 year long collaborator Arian Leviste. Not only his he
one of the finest producers around he is an absolutely crackingly good DJ -
last year he mixed up the Poker Flat back-catalogue for the Poker Flat 5
Year Mix CD and previous to that he put out a firing Mix CD on Technasia's
'Plus' imprint. For this occasion however, Mr. Tejada will be treating us to
a very special live set.
With an acclaimed soprano for a mother and a conductor (no, not a bus
conductor) for a father, it's hardly surprising that John Tejada devoted his
life to music. Born in Vienna, Austria, Tejada moved to his current home,
Los Angeles, when he was eight. Eschewing traditional music in favor of the
electronic variety, Tejada's early love of all things hip hop developed into
a penchant for electro and later techno. Palette Recordings was started by
John Tejada in the fall of 1996. Many releases later it is one of the most
respected techno labels in the world. Palette became an exclusive outlet for
Tejada to release his most prized music. After having released 14 singles,
it was time to showcase the talents of other artists. Most of these artists
which include Pieter K, Dominick Martin, DJ Abstract, and Klute, who are
primarily known for drum and bass production, showcase their techno talents
on Palette. These artists along with tech veterans Titonton Duvante, The Rip
Off Artist, and 11 year Tejada collaborator Arian Leviste, have given the
label its fresh and unprecedented sound.
Normally associated with his peers in Techno from Detroit, Europe and
elsewhere in the US and the world, John Tejada has embraced electronic music
as a personal frontier, expanding on his formidable resume as a Techno
recording artist as producer and remixer, DJ, and label owner. With dozens
of singles, remixes, some film and TV work and contributions to sample CDs
to his credit, this recent expansion has born a slew of tracks deeply
informed by his uncompromised aesthetic honed over years of diligent
production which finds its roots in Detroit Techno but references a far
broader range of music, both in and outside of electronic music. His
musically formative years were steeped in Classical music, growing up in
family of performing artists--his mother a soprano singer and his father a
conductor which then widened to include hip hop, DJing and finally,
electronic music.
