Second-generation Detroit-adjacent techno star
Richie Hawtin is wrapping up work on his next
mix-album, DE9: Transitions, which is due out in
September, according to his publicist.

The CD promises to push the concept of the
mix-CD, with his label claiming that it will be
the first "fully encompassing"
5.1-channel, surround-sound mix. It will also
come packaged with a music-and-video DVD version,
with visuals to go to the music. Hawtin has
apparently been exploring the latest software
technology from his new base in Berlin, and the
mixes will apparently come not on the
song-to-song level, but perhaps deeper, on a
track-by-track (as in studio tracks -- voice,
drum, synth, etc.) level, a la Sasha's work with
Ableton Live. (Hawtin has had a custom Allen
& Heath Xone:92 mixer made to control Ableton
Live via MIDI).

The CD is the follow up to 2001's DE9: Closer to
the Edit, and 1999's Decks, EFX & 909, a
well-received series that has pushed the
boundaries of the DJ mix by adding effects and
the Roland 909 drum machine to the equation.

The electronic music world is incredibly
difficult to stay ahead of. What is branded cool
one week, might be slated as dirty the next.
Endless techniques are used by artists and their
management to try to keep themselves beyond
mainstream musical comprehension, and therefore
slipping from the razor’s edge where
legends can be crafted.

Richie Hawtin is far beyond the forefront of
electronic music. His uncrackable image matches
his flawless sound and genre pioneering styles.
After 4 years, he is back with his latest
transformation, evolving alongside technology to
ensure he doesn't get lost in a world of dated
sounds, average compilations and half-assed
singles.

His studio in Berlin has been in full production
for the third release in the DE9 series.
Following on from Decks, EFX & 909 in 1999
and then Closer to the Edit in 2001 DE9:
Transitions is the long awaited latest mix from
Hawtin. Utilising the latest recording
technologies and automation techniques, he is
said to explore not only the traditional musical
transition over time and amplitude (X and Y) but
the depth (Z) in terms of space and perception -
bringing you much closer to the edit so to speak.

Released in September of 2005 on CD & DVD,
DE9: Transitions will be recorded within a fully
immersive 5.1 Surround Sound environment,
complete with high resolution audio versions and
accompanying visuals.

Richie Hawtin will preview DE9: Transitions in
5.1 surround sound for the first time at Sonar,
Barcelona (June 16 -18, 2005).

Richie Hawtin has a couple of tour dates across
the USA confirmed for the next fortnight.
Including the huge Detroit techno based Fuse-In
Festival.
Richie Hawtin US Tour Dates
May 30 Mon - Detroit - Fuse-In Festival,
Underground Stage
June 02 Thu - Denver - The Church
June 03 Fri - New York - Avalon
June 04 Sat - Los Angeles - Avalon

it's called "DE9: Transition", for the record. not plural.

you should hear him talk about this one. really very excited about it! he's been trying to do a 5.1 release for a few years now; finally panned out. he's geeked.

g
24-05-2005, 10:32 PM
oh yeah - and he's doing Plastikman live interpretations with the Barcelona Orchestra during Sonar this year. crazy.

i'll defer judgement until i hear it, but i generally don't think 5.1 is well suited to dj mixes.

i do like amon tobin's 5.1 set, and love hearing abstract music in 5.1 in a theater setting (you ever go to the electronic classical festival at umich, g?)...

...but i think as far as dancefloor techno goes, it's gonna be a gimmick.

but i'm a big enough man to realize i could be absolutely, 100% dead wrong...

this one is slower (bpm) than CE so you might not call it dancefloor techno

If that's the case then if/when he takes this release on tour, where will he play, clubs or theatres. Are people expected to sit down in lounge chairs, smoke cigars, stroke their goaties and discuss the finer points of techno or dance to it :eh:

Beatnik techno here we come. Crazy man.

think about when he toured supporting Closer and Consumed.. it's not like suddenly his dj sets sounded like those albums. or when he toured for the first 2 DE9 releases, he didn't suddenly only play tracks from those mixes. or if he did mock parts of Transition live, they don't have to be locked at some certain bpm... c'mon.

i wouldn't be surprised if the plastikman live, de9, and surround sound things all came together for something special in terms of performance. but that would be a special occasion. probably.

i've been waiting for techno producers to do some 5.1 tracks/mixes..........even though many people dont have surround systems, it will be a nice treat for those who do

it's a good purchase...you can get them pretty cheap now. mine was $300...the amplifier is fantastic and the speakers mediocre, but i'll replace those eventually...

also great for video games ;)

(flaps arms for dramatic effect)

yes it's true..
it was announced on the bbc world service earlier today that:
( and i quote )
" every single techno artist in the world is crap "

so obviously it must be true....
so let's pack up the website , burn all our records
sell our technics to some hip hop guys for a tenner
and go down the pub.

no reeko was accussed of suxxusxing recently
his brother eeko however was merely accused of suxing
whilst squeako
( their combined double act)
was accused of just simply sucking

what does this mean
i do not know...but of course it is absolutely true

I don't.

However, I have it on good authority that I blow.

And occasionally I honk.
