ayone have any ideas on this problem.
windows xp wont allow access to anything on the main users sign on. so no files can be accessed.
the secondrt user is fine although no chances can be made to the system from this sign in.
ideally we want to reformat the whole pc, but there are files thet we need to take off first. although we can't get into them..
please help.

Whats wrong with just using the second user to do all your stuff? If you are going to reformat anyway not a huge point in going to a bit of effort to fix a problem. If you mean that neither of the users can see the files then you might have to check the privaledges on the two users, if you aren't already you need to get the admin login/password and try again.
Failing that, you could always try throwing the drive into another machine which should let you read it fine then sort it out ready for a format.
Go to users and make everyone Administrator.
Reset user password.
Right click on folders you wanna copy and set permissions EVERYONE to have access and rights to all !
should work
