I use Cakewalk Sonar, mostly sequencing loops from fruity. My tunes are hardly an advert for this approach yet though

Mainly use Acid, mostly for sequencing loops from live stuff. Also Computer Muzys (the free CM prog) 'cos it's sooooo simple to automate vsts.

i've never used ableton so cant comment on it, but to me the two best ones are logic and cubase, from my experience

I don't suppose you know where I can get hold of this? I've not found anything yet that I'm really that comfortable with for vsts... sounds very interesting.

It's on the cover DVD to computer music each month I think still - along with a few other bits and bobs - synths and samplers to go with it...
It's a bit esoteric, but it's got some good tricks and automates any vst plugins really easy.
If you can't find it I can probably find you a CD with it on, if I root about in the cupboard...
