Philip Ryan [cypher-music.net]
DJ Laz-E [Voodoo Scratch Attack]

Admission - e7 / e5 members

This week we are really looking forward to having veteran Clondalkin B-Boy,
DJ Laz-E cut the EC decks up with a Voodoo Scratch Attack of old school
electro. It's f-f-f-fresh! Expect to hear the likes of Hashim, Soulsonic
Force, Afrika Bambataa, Newcleus, Egyptian Lover and many more. Check out an
interview and wicked old-skool mix from Laz-E at
http://www.hiphopireland.com/profiles/laze.htm .

From the moment Laz-E picked up his first three decks on National Bin
Collection Day (a day when you can throw out anything), he knew he was
destined for greatness. Having set his hands upon 2 Pye's belt drives and
one Ferguson unit, he set to avail of their advanced tone and volume
functions in the quest for the perfect mix. What he got initially was an
electric shock, being blown across the room after adjusting the turntables
circuit boards that little bit more than they'd both bargained for.

Although at first mainly a rapper, Laz-e met up with many of his current
contemporaries - you'll find some of them guesting on the show - at a local
breakdance club in Clondalkin in 1985 and played one of his first gigs
there. Stints on Radio Diamond 106 in Crumlin, and Smile FM in Ballyfermot
in '87 and '88 respectively. '88 also saw him play the Saturday afternoon
club at McGonagles - a regular haunt of Oisin Lunny, Martin Moore, and a
young DJ Mek (Scary Eire). Judge Jules and Norman Jay were fairly regular
visitors to the soul sessions there on Sundays around the same time if
memory serves us correctly.

Laz-E was often not averse to playing a bit of house; his early DJing career
saw him concentrate more on syncin' beats rather than scratch technique
(quiet you there at the back). Also keen to work on his mic technique, Laz-e
availed of the opportunity to head for three summer residencies in Greece in
'96, '96 and '98. Around the same time, he'd begun working on some routines
with Mek and Sherlock and they eventually granted themselves the Voodoo
Scratch Attack tag. By then, Laz-e's co-host, Davey Splyce was also starting
to make an impression and joined the ever expanding crew. [biography sampled

Following on from Laz-E we welcome back Philip Ryan. Pippo has been
a regular guest at Electric City since the club started and his deep driving
techno sets have recently gone down a real treat at Pogo, Compression and Model
One. His sets are always full to the brim of turntable trickery as he chops,
scratches & juggles his way through techno from the likes of Jeff
Mills, UR, Surgeon and so on to stunning effect. Philip's site
[cypher-music.net] has been going from strength to strength over the last
few months with a host of excellent new mixes from Jon Hussey, Darren Allen
& Richardo Brophy now available for download.
