FreakLab is a new club we're starting which will run every four weeks at Studio 24 in Edinburgh. The first night is on Friday 11th July and will be completely FREE!
Responding to the current climate in dance music, FreakLab represents a cross-genre hybrid encompassing many different and varied forms of electronic music. Utilising the Dogma residents, some old Edinburgh favourites and the freshest new talent, FreakLab provides a forum for them to explore new territories and experimental sounds. With no constraints on musical style, each night will flow differently yet smoothly through every genre from freaked out house, tech-funk and disco to drum’n’bass, ****ed up breaks, twisted dub and dirty electro. FreakLab is our vision of how we see the future…………..
Resident DJ's :
Neil Templar
With an intense love of all electronic music, Neil’s inspiration comes from early acid house and American artists such as Joey Beltram, Kenny Larkin and Jeff Mills. His dj career began with a 5 night a week residency at Negociants quickly followed by a residency at house and techno club Apex. An extremely technical dj, Neil leans towards the deep and moody with a strong electro side and in 2000 was invited to play as mainfloor resident at Dogma where he remains still as the main musical influence behind the club
Al MacDonald
A long term devotee of all forms of dance music, Al’s initial interest was sparked by early American house and techno, citing Claude Young, DJ Hell and the Chicago sounds of Gene Farris, Derrick Carter and Cajmere’s Cajual Records as having a major influence on his overall sound. A founding member of his own clubs Apex and Loop, Al can currently be found rocking the mainfloor at Dogma, describing his sound as “deep, hard and funky” and giving DJ Sneak, Kevin Saunderson and Marshall Jefferson as his current influences.
Maxx
A well known face on the house and techno scene, Maxx has been spinning tunes at clubs, gigs and parties around Edinburgh for over ten years. Originally influenced by the heavy beats of techno and especially the Detroit sounds of Jeff Mills, he played out at many local clubs such as Numb and Disuko. Offered a residency at Camel Beats, Maxx brought in a lighter more funky element to his sound, mellowing out into the familiar funk, deep house, electro and disco which he now plays as resident on the second floor at Dogma.
Paul Curran
With primary influences including Laurent Garnier and the infamous Warp, Relief and F-Communications imprints, Paul is one of the most eclectic dj’s in Edinburgh. With a passion for genre-busting, he can be heard mashing up everything from funky techno and dark electro to hip hop and deep, soulful house and for several years he played out fortnightly as resident at the seminal club Lift. A huge fan of Derrick Carter’s Classic and Igloo labels, Paul states his current influences as Carl Craig, Mathew Herbert and the unique Si Begg.
Rob Dylan
Originally inspired by artists like Dave Angel and the revered LFO, Rob adapted his dj style over the years into a space which now fills the dark cracks between house and techno. As resident at Camel Beats, Rob’s sets were built around Playhouse and Perlon records, proving unique enough for him to be offered residencies at two of Scotland’s best known clubs, Pure in Edinburgh and Test in Glasgow. Currently favouring artists such as Pantytec, Krikor and Dabrye, Rob has further developed his sound into what he now describes as “Crack House and Rubber Beats.”
Ibrahim
With a shadowy past in the Bristol and Edinburgh party scenes, Ibrahim displays a wide range of influences in his breakbeat-led sets, from the ****ed up sounds of Squarepusher and Freq Nasty to Rennie Pilgrem, playing them fast and furious with a healthy dose of drum’n’bass, twisted garage, dub and grunge all thrown in together. A longtime Pillbox addict and Disciple of the Church of Dogma, he is also the founding resident of the regular free Sunday mash up Fat Mess which currently resides in the basement of Poprokit.
