Someone please tell me what this is all about. I don't speak German, I haven't got a clue what it means but perhaps it's something to do with the compilation series. Oh yeah, and it's obviously something to do with 'hard' music.
I've heard people describe their music as Schranz..
What the hell is this all about!!!?????

wasn`t it just a word chris liebing used to describe his music, then when everyone started calling it that he got pissed off anjd said it was techno what he played.
think it was something like that.

yeah thats right techfunk02, was used to describe a certain sound on techno tracks ... sposed to mean like a shredding sound ...
this is of chris's site.
Since there has been a lot of talk about the word "Schranz" lately, I wanted to post my very own statement about it and not one, which is written by people who don`t really know.Yes, it is true, together with a friend I came up with the word "Schranz" in a Recordstore in Frankfurt in the year 1994. Not true is, that I am now annoyed by the term, I am only annoyed by all the discussions which come up about it, especially here in Germany.Everyone who uses the word "Schranz" to describe her or his musical taste or even way of living, shall do so and I think that is completely o.k..
Basically I like to call what I spin and produce "Techno" and in general "electronic Music".For me personally, since that day in 1994, "Schranz" is a description for various dark and distorted
sounds in Techno. At that point I couldn`t come up with a better word, but of course then I also didn`t know, that one day it would become so popular. I don`t want to and I can`t tell anyone how and where to use the word and in what respect. That´s CLAU 04 was called :"Call it what you want..."
So be tolerant, make up your own mind about it and don`t believe everything which is written in magazines.

I was in Germany not long ago and from what I figure is that it's basically Hard techno which is composed almost solely of drum sounds, or other distorted stuff which is then used almost like drums... It is "cold" (who is 2 say what is cold !?!)... also generally dark, fast ... very mechanical like sounding... the groove is very straight ...
I've also heard some1 say music for marching (just like a soldier)...
:P
Don't like it much although I did have tracks on Shrazwerk 5 and 8!!

thanx pathogen/mig - that's cleared that up nicely.
but don't you think it's a totally stupid name?
to a stupid yorkshire bloke like me it sound like a daft marketing ploy that doesn't even have any appeal whatsoever.
only my opinion.
why not just stick with 'hard techno'?

Tags r buls*** but eventually we end up needing it
i mean Even the forum is sorta split up...
Still I think German techno (if there is such a thing) as a slight different flava so just maybe it needs a tag... why not just simply German Hard Techno !?!?
what ever... as some1 once said Luv it or leave it!

where I live and try to spin, alot dont speak much english. if I tell em I play hard techno they could think I'm talking hardcore or hardstyle. If I say banging techno they wouldn't have a clue what I'm talking about.
so what's wrong with schranz, it's just an expression? it's what you make of it.. at least if I say my style is schranz the chances are they'll think it's noisy, hard + bangin. even last friday I finally got a gig and on the flyer I was supposed play hardstyle! I started with slobodan and those teeny raver hardstlyers looked at me like I'm an alien, cos they were expecting hardstyle. in the future I will say I play schranz to non-english speakers..

@ crime - lol, I meant german or swiss german that dont speak much english.
schranz is a german word/expression ,so it doesn't really apply to people who dont speak german.
on a funnier note, alot of swiss call hard techno "detroit" so maybe one of you professionals should open a techno school-academy in switzerland to clear things up

if you say it right the word schranz can sound just like trance. depending on the pronounciation and accents used, of course.

Don't see the problem with it myself. The boy is just using it to describe his sound , which is fair enough. Schranz to me doesn't sound cool but it certainly doesn't annoy me.
In the end he does have a fairly unique sound , not saying it's a style of it's own , but you will always know a Liebing tune ( that can be both a good and a bad thing). No harm in the guy having a wee name for it really , he's not telling everyone else that they should be naming their style Schranz aswell.
There is always going to be different sub genres in Techno. If someone asks you what music you like and you say Techno , they will always follow it up with " What kind" and then you have to explain it. You can't just say techno , cause it is one of the most varied styles of music going.
I don't think it is anything to do with commercialism either as Techno will never ever be commercial , although I do think it is becoming more "popular".

The Liebing text pretty much sums it up, but there´s more to the word.
When I started listening to techno, the Word "Schranz" had just started to be used in the Frankfurt Area, and no one really knew what it was. Back then I couldn´t tell Liebing from Sven Väth, but on that fateful night, when I was in the U60311 and I had my first E... I knew what "Schranz" was. ...well at least I thought I did, actually I didn´t know shit, but that´s about the point most people who use the word are at. The word itself in german has a strange sort of dynamics, kind of like the Word "Scheiße" (s hit), which can be used for pretty much everything; positive or negative. Kinda like f*ck in english.
Nowadays hardly anyone used the word Schranz anymore to describe their music, because it is no longer considered cool. Then again, at least when you say "Schranz", everyone knowsyou mean hard banging german techno. Personally.. I don´t really give a Schranz
