Favourite styles:
Driving funky techno, harder groovey techno-house, tribalistic grooves

Biography:

“I got infatuated with electronic music with artists like Kraftwerk („Man Machine“ album is one of my faves), Jean-Michel Jarre and the new wave techno-pop bands like Human League, Soft Cell, old Depeche Mode stuff, Visage, Ultravox, Japan, Blancmange, etc. In 1989, I‘ve started working in the KSET club, where we were playing various types of interesting electronic music, spicing it up with some industrial sounds. My record collection includes a wide spectre of electronic music styles, from older stuff like Cabaret Voltaire, DAF and Severed Heads to the then popular industrial bands like Test Department and SPK, who were a big influence on what I do musically today. I should by no means forget mentioning artists like Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly (my favorite band from those days), their side-projects (Delerium, Synaesthesia, Intermix), and the brilliant Clock Dva project from the musical genius Adi Newton. I was including many EBM (Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Ministry, etc.), New Beat and Acid House releases to my sets. All those music styles have influenced me strongly, and I would not be doing things the way I do them today without such musical education. I like my sets to fluctuate between being hypnotic and powerful, and I love to knit into them the musical influences I’ve mentioned above. Music taste built on electronic music of the 80’s and 90’s gave me a good basis for the work I’ve been doing nowadays, from tribalistic driving techno to sometimes harder techno-house sets. I have made it a rule to myself to always play music from the soul and with the soul. Not just matching the bloody beats - there must be more to a set than just technical perfection. My original plan and the fundamental reason as to why I'm doing the things I do, was to always present something new to the audience - new sounds and new energy."

Profile:

DJ Mary has been into electronic music since the end of the eighties, when he started polishing his turntable skills with a refreshing choice of hard funky music, enriched with EBM (electronic body music), Acid House, New Beat and others. His deep love of electronic music has produced an equisite music taste, which is the primary source of inspiration for his work. More than ten years of DJ-ing experiences, ardent dedication, and a unique choice of music (varying from one set to another) have modelled a DJ, who enjoys big respect and popularity at the Croatian electronic music scene. He uses his technical skills to perfection, playing with mathematically structured techno sequences and moods, while hypnotising the audience with relentlessly driving percussive beats. For a change, he loves to shake them up with some groovy, harder Techno-House as well. For the past few years, DJ Mary has been successfully building reputation as one of the most exciting Croatian DJs by playing alongside some of today’s most prominent world DJ’s at major dance events and clubs in Zagreb and other parts of Croatia, Europe among others at Aquatica, Future Shock-Zg, Interparty (Amsterdam), Rave Nation (Antwerpen), Automatik (Paris), In Your Face (Dijon), Sub Bass (Metz), Stereodrome (Bratislava), Connect Yourself (Prague), Gazometer (Vienna), Stereo Studio (Zagreb), Hardwork/Miniwork/Futurescope (Zagreb), Space Night (Celje), Astralis (Zagreb), Future Beatz (Izola), Input (Sarajevo)....

Goes back to something I was thinking the other day....I've spent the past 2 years Gigging, and when I look at it, I ain't done bad, but times are getting hard... Sure I did a fair bit of blagging to get gigs, sending e-mails that some Promotors might well have seen as spam, but I don't think posting stuff on message boards like this one really helps, it just makes you look desperate... Personal contact with promotors is much better, and above all, it's better to get asked to play somewhere... At the end of the day, if you've created enough of a profile to play around the world, and have the skills as a DJ or Live Act to back it up, you will get gigs, especially if you have some kind of niche that is your own.. in fact, that is essencial, having your own niche or angle, which is what makes you different to the next guy who's after a gig, especially if you look at scenes like the scene in germany where there are over 1000 DJs trying to get work in an ever decreasing market... I seriously doubt there are promotors trawling the message boards looking for the next act to book in their club... it's more about word of mouth on the ground, reputation etc....

i certainly don't mind reading about ppl's up and coming releases on this board - why not??? ok the advert was really, really long and it was a little bit overboard, but there's no need at all for 'piss off' (BMB -you definitely don't speak for everyone) and 'gimme some earplugs' (there's no need at all for this). i don't get it at all. why did you guys react that way?

Didn't get a chance to respond in the other thread as it's been locked so I'll have to respond here. Apologies if my remark about the earplugs appeared a bit strong, it was a bit of a knee jerk reaction to the spamming - and let's not beat around the bush, that's what it is. I was typing in the heat of the moment. As I'm sure everyone who has a website or even an internet based email account will know, spam is one of the biggest irritations on the internet and to come on a forum that is normally free of this type of thing and to find multiple posts advertising, as Henry already pointed out, an already successful and well known label really got on my nerves. Blatant self-promotion isn't acceptable for someone like me promoting a small clubnight, so it should be even more unacceptable for a big label. How would people feel if I blatantly kept bouncing my threads in the events forum back to the top of the forum ? I'd expect to be told to piss off, and quite rightly too. By all means inform us, let us know what's going on, but not the full page adverts please.

And to be specific about the earplugs remark for a moment. I didn't mean for one minute for that to sound like I was speaking for anybody but myself. It was just a personal opinion. Much as I have enjoyed some of Bailey's earlier output, at the moment I would rather sit on a rusty spike at the bottom of a well rather than listen to his current releases. But that's all it is, my opinion. I personally find him boring, no more no less. If that offends anyone, I'm sorry, but on a forum, or in a community such as this, there should be room for all opinions surely ?

And as I said already, all this gimmicky shit annoys me. I want to buy a record because it has good tracks on it, not because it comes with free knickers. It smacks of desperation in a shrinking scene, something that's been mentioned by a couple of people on here recently. I don't think that this is the way to revive interest in our (underground) music at all. To me it's an inevitable outcome that was bound to happen when the underground flirts with and courts the mainstream. When you get people trying to hang on to their underground credibilty whilst behaving like every other maistream, commercial outfit out there it's always going to annoy those who are still firmly rooted in the underground scene. And that, Mark, in a nutshell should answer your question as to why we react like this : Because we care.

So apologies perhaps for the way I expressed myself, but I still stand by the intent and reasons for saying it. And clearly quite a few others feel the same.

All I would add is that I sure luv 2 see infos, some promo. even, on people that have an active roll in this forum,.. cause in some strange way u care n r a little curious... I guess tolerance would b loads bigger if this were the case.

my 2 cents!

well explained patrick. i think you've got many valid points there.

just let's not spam the board on our first post eh?

crime your post is absolute genius.
Hardly. It's merely the words of someone with some integrity, who sees that the most honest way of being "out there" is cos people want you, not because you've sold yourself on anything above and beyond the music you play/release. Also someone who sees and laments the conflict between doing things the best way, and having to survive on your trade.

The fact that it seems so inspired is an indication of how little of that there is going around - which is a reason to be sad.

It's a good idea. Overload has a "member announcements" section on their forum, used for any sort of self promotion, spam etc., also posting of mixes.

basically, there are loads of producers in this techno forum that work for loads of different labels and having it would probably mean less friction, me thinks!

hmmmm... yeah - member announcements. let's talk about this. what - one for techno and 1 for trance or just one general 'member announcement' section?

hold on, why don't i just put a sentence in the 'filez' forums that you can post promo stuff in there too?

Why not just make every start they promo post with the words Shameless Self promotion... I don't mean this as a joke (I did it once) .. 2 be honest I would much rather post in the prodution forum than on a general 1.. which as a User I would look into...
still If some1 from the guys posted a link 2 they're stuff there is a 80% chance I would check it out..

anywayz just my 2 cents (that makes ir 4 by now lol :P ) .. i may be talkin bollo** here ... dunno just a though

Hmm, this is an interesting one.

We (Axiom) have done exactly this in the past, on this forum and others. Trying to get people to listen to our stuff, get feedback, learn something and progress etc.

Our approach is very different to 'Mr Mary', we have quite a passive approach but 'Mr Mary' has a very very aggressive and impersonal approach.

He is trying to promote himself (obviously) it's just that he's probably not doing it in the best way.

That's why we posted our thread in the Techno Files section.

But, yeh, I see the relevance of the points listed above and maybe all Shameful Self Promotion should be in the Techno/Trance Files section - it seems to make sense to me...

I am forever posting tracks in the files forum. The advice I have got has helped me loads. Not realy that bothered what people think about it and I dont see why anyone should. Afterall it is the files forum
