Dirty Bass Live in Montreal (http://www.iterativemusic.com/~dirtybass/Dirty%20Bass%20-%20Many%20Faces%20Live%20PA%20-%20%20Embryon%203%20Montreal%2028-10-05.mp3)
A big mix of styles in this PA, as I was playing to a very mixed crowd, so expect a bit of a journey.

cool, i forgot to tune into the stream, but i hear that didnt happen anyway.
will check this out tomorrow, downloading now
edit : managed to listen to this tonight, great stuff, i was expecting really varied material after your write up, going from dance floor funky to your really dark broken beat stuff, but this was all just great dancefloor 4 to the floor goodness.
alot of tracks in here that i've never heard before too, really good set, the only thing i would say is a few too many edits early on

just wondering steve, what does your live set-up consist of? i recognise a lot of tracks clearly but theres a lot of edits in there and it doesn't sound like ableton.

My live PA consists of a High Spec Laptop, Behringer BCF 2000 controller, and A M-Audio Firewire Audiophile soundcard.
The majority of the PA is live Bar 3 tunes, which are full audio files that I mix in to give myself a break, so I can actually look up from the PC to see what`s going on on the floor.
The edits and stuff are done with various VST`s I have sitting over the master outs in ableton.
The party was Embyon 3 halloween party this year, and montreal ****in rules.
Here`s some photo`s of the party, some of which are me.

Yeah, that love hotel I was in was great, and there was a murder in there too to spice up my stay.
Can`t ask for more than that, meet some mates, do a good gig, stay in a hotel with mirrored ceilings, and experience CSI up close. Walking back to the hotel room to phone you up chris, in my blood covered coat, while the hotel was crawling with cops, was a pretty surreal experience.

Cheers folks, I never really know the response I`ll get from this stuff, as it`s so mixed, I thought people would prefer more single style stuff, so this is very encouraging.
I`m gonna be spending a lot of time focusing on the Voidloss live PA soon, and I`ll probably put the first test of it online here.

This is f_ucken great :)
I am in love with it on the first few listens. It is fresh as and superb sound quality. I will prolly rate it as the best Live set I have heard this year....easy. Keep up the work, I cant wait to hear where you go next. I'll stay tuned, I'm hooked on this stuff. Brilliant.

You've got to be farken kidding!!
I just sat here and typed out a whole commentary to this set...it moved us so much that I had to give feedback throughout due to the immensity of this work.
Guess what!!
I got logged out during the process so the whole farken thing I wrote was erased!!?? Fark!!
Anyway, throughout the whole journey I met Peter Gunn who walked into my house and asked if I'd seen his goldfish, went through countless emotional crisis' and even met alien creatures proposing that they knew you and that you are the product of some bizarre experiment in human-alien genetics....which i believe them.
I know know why you go by the name of Dirty bass and I am humbled by this work and amazed that it came from one persons head. It is timely and so necessary for this point in time that I am scared by its presense.
I just wish that I could drop around and have a beer with you and talk about its conception.....
Cheers.

nice! i was there to hear this set, very good, minus the crappy sound system! cant wait to hear it again!
It was definetly a bit too bassy in the wrong places... had to walk to the back to even it out.
But I'd rather have too much bass than not enough bass

One question I am needing to ask of you Mr. DB...
The vocal at the start and at about 66mins.....did you do the vocals? or did you lift them?
The reason I ask is that I think they are farken awesome and really sound fully sick mate ;)
Yes, I am listening to this set again for about the 100th time since I downloaded it.....maybe I'm sick???
dirty_bass
25-11-2005, 04:44 PM
The vocals at the start are from a reading by Charles Bukowski (the late and great) of one of his greatest poems. Dinosauria We.
I twisted it up a bit to make it more evil.
The vocals that start at 66 mins are written by me, and spoken by Chris X5, and then twisted further, and are from a track, Blue Eyes Under A Dark Sky, that I keep menaing to send out to some labels.
For the PA I cut them into sentences and triggered them throughout the track as it progressed. All a bit too complicated really.
Here is the link to the finished track on it`s own.

Downloading that now Dirty Bass.. looking forwards to it.. .
Rythmntech - Hmmm, Choppy effects? Havn't heard the set yet, but maybe Supatrigga? (cuts audio into slices/mashes it up on the fly) ..Free plugin for download from Smartelectronix.com (theres loads of quality free plugins there in fact)
this is the link to supatrigga -

Hope i'm not giving away any trade secrets there! well I gots ta look out for a fellow Dub!

It wasn`t supatrigga, I find it way too un-user friendly for a live environment.
I used the DBX buffer Override

Ha! - I tricked you into revealing your trade secret!! now EVERYONE can make the same music as YOU!!!
I'm listening to the mix now... quality stuff man... nice and lively....
the only thing i could criticise is the slow fading of one track to another in some places where a quick rough cut would be more effective (like from the salt and peppa track to the next) ... and someone mentioned too many edits early on, which they must have meant the use of the choppy effects so frequently early in the mix... I'd have to agree... understandable though, in a live situation where you feel like you should be doing something while the track is playing... hard to restrain the itchy fingers... chopping in beats from another track might be more appealing early on...
I'm nit picking here but thats just my opinion....
anyway,

It`s hard to jump from one track to another very quickly in my pa, as each part is separate, there fore I have to fade parts rather than trakcs into each other, which is difficult, as I only have two hands, although I am getting better at using my hand sideways to move lots of faders at once.
The edits early on is just down to the fact that the very first track is a whole track mixed in, rather than totally live, I did this to break myself into the set easy, but I got bored and messed about a bit.
There you go, it`s not a studio mix, it`s a live mix, so it`s not perfect and not meant to be and generally I`m a nervous wreck doing these PA`s as I have probably given myself too much to do.
there is no voidloss stuff in this PA Dan as at the party I was at it would have totally killed the floor.
I will be posting up the first recording of the new voidloss live that I will be playing out soon at a secret party in the uk, so you can get some nasty darkness then.

cool, look forward to hearing a new dark set.
as soon as i posted that comment about there being too many edits, i wish i hadn't, i realised in a live setting, its totally different, and people love hearing those kind of things, and like you say, its gets you warmed up and into it quicker
