View Full Version : playing after a drum and bass dj....advice? opinions?
alright, i have played after drum and bass dj's a handfull of times, most of the time with little success on keeping the dancefloor going and having to spin to a very weak crowd for the first 15 minutes until the techno people realize there is techno playing...
this summer im playing right after Adam F at a fair sized festival and im kinda racking my brain as to how to start the set....im also thinking that maybe i should just start off with whatever i want and not care...
i know its been a topic of decussion before about the relationships between techno and jungle/dnb....the percussion...the evil synth lines...the 2 minute intros and the funky diva samples...etc...(kidding about that last bit)
any suggestions as to what style of techno i should start off with to keep at least a few of the drum and bass heads dancing?
i dunno....what would u do....

I'd say Drumcode 20,5 is a good place to start.

from drum and bass, do some tech-breaks, bassy techno, then whatever

my favorite tactic is to either
a) if the dnb record is playing at 45, throw on a techno record, tick it up to 45, and start cutting back and forth. then at the right moment, hit 33 on both cuts, dropping the tech record to the right speed, and turning the dnb in to electro. THAT gets their attention.
or
b) start cutting up the dnb record and throwing delay effects on to cut up the beat. let them know right from the start that you. mean. business.

Take D&B DJ's last record, do a massive spinback, yank it off the decks and smash it over your head Mark EG style.
That will do the trick. :toast:

Something bass heavy and chunky, like Neil Landstrumm or Dave Tarrida. Or Maybe Si Begg. Still enough of a b-line for the D&B kids, but pushing the rhythm and drum patterns towards techno...
Throw a paddy and demand to be on before them.

Hope for an A&H mixer and VCF the tracks at the same time, bringing the techno in and the D&B out and smash in on a fat b-line.

You could play DJ Scud's remix of Panacea's King of the Jungle on his Underground Superstardom album. Starts off heavy as nails, but breaks down to a old skool hardcore sound and tempo.
You could then spin a couple of old harcore tunes before mixin' in techno with great aplomb, ease and gusto :)

it'd start with a big spin back (they love all the rewind shit!!) then drop in something with a phat b-line like hydraulix 30a or something with a heavy dub feel.
depends on how many bpm's will he finish
just dont let that number go down too fast, crowd usually dont like it
i'd try with some off beat slovakian shyte
or shock them with breakcore lol
someone mentioned older hardcore, which could also go well

Make a DnB to Techno track yourself in Ableton... Use a really simple break and filter bottom out of it... Then slice in a Techno loop and bring the loop out slowly with a SHITLOAD of effects. You should be able to slight of hand the Tempo down this way without the crowd losing interest... Then quickly mix into something Bassline driven and you are on your way!

Go with the hardcore/gabber techno if you have any. Then, just begin pitching it down until you reach the tempo you want. Should be easilly doable in 3 records without screwing up the crowd's groove.
wicked guys thanks
definatly thinking bass heavy....im contemplating some tube jerk or even something huge like "it doesnt matter" by the chemical brothers....
oh and an advantage i have is the only other style of music playing at the same time as me is psy trance....

I always thought that was a bad ass tune. terry mullan used to play it here in the states all the time years back. I have played it a few times in some techno sets and it fits in perfectly well.

spot on - drop some booty bass and some heavy electro and take it from there or search about a bit and grab some old skool d&b which goes well into techno.

once in a while i will mix hardcore into the d&b to keep the flow going, then slow it down from 45 to 33 after a breakdown. but usually i will start with something with a long intro to break the flow and prepare people for something different. kindof like eating a slice of ginger between courses of sushi.
im pretty sure im not gonna mix out of adam f's last track, but it sounds like fun for next time this happens ...

i've had to do this alot after drum and bass dj's where the crowd are totally into the d+b sound. basically make sure no matter what, you let the guy's last record play out - it's a sign of respect and the crowd notice shit like this. also shake the guys hand, make it out like you appreciate what he's done cause if the d+b see this they might just be prepared to give your music a chance too.
Then (and this is important), make sure there's a good gap of silence between his last record and your first.
Then off ya go, just do your thing and hope for the best. I've found recently that playing your first track of CD and making sure you've mastered the hi's up can help too after d+b cause alot of these guys play worn out dubs.
Anyway hope this helps :)
making this face also helps raiste the atmosphere

Actually, I'm not sure I agree with letting the record play out. It depends on circumstance. I'm sure you've been in the position before where the DJ throws on the 10 minute epic track right before you with a whopping 1 minute left to his set. Back when I used to care more about DJing, I used to bring a shitload of different records with me just for those type of DJs, even though I was mainly getting booked for hardcore. I do agree that it's a bad move to just turn off the table and let it die out as you bring your record in. Boring and kills the energy. But, if you bring some shit that can match off it tempo wise, you can usually school 'em by playing off the energy they already gave off and changing it up significantly. All the more reason I think good DJs shouldn't be so damn genre exclusive. But, hell, whatever works.

gah, i hate it when djs just turn off the damn player while the last track is playing!like someone else mentioned though, if it's an epic track, letting it play out is rediculous, and I think that can help ruin the mood too. Fading it out slowly usually does it for me

my main reason for winding down someone's track is if they decided to play a 6-7 minute epic whatever track, and it's on the dot my time to play. i will generally ask if there is a really dope break i should let play out, but other than that, if they didn't keep track of time, they are not eating into my timeslot. call me an ass, but...well...yeah...i am an ass.
