About record shopping??

Do you ever buy a record(s) that you don't really like, but it happens to be the best of what you listen to that day, and you buy it only because you've been listening to records in some shop for a while (maybe an hour) and feel you would be or look like a knob if you walked out with nothing. I just don't feel like I'm at HMV when I go to a record specialist shop. HMV don't give a shit if you move in for the day and leave with fcuk all. Maybe its just me, but I get the feelin' (and I'm not sure where it comes from) that I should buy something if I spend time in a record specialist shop. Nevermind supporting the cause, there are some records you know you have to buy. You put on the record and you say "fcuk me, that's fcukin awesome." So buy that one. But do you buy stuff cause you feel you have to?? Maybe its just my experience, in shops round my way? Anyway, I thought I would through it out for discussion.

I used to when I started buying vinyl and was in a shop with very little decent techno. Can't remember the last time recently I've not found something I like, but I only go once a month and go to shops with tons and tons of techno.

Ear fatigue is a very real thing. Personally I don't think anyone can process what they are hearing very well after skipping through tracks for an hour or so, especially if sifting through tracky techno...

i've been to this shop 4-5 times in last 2 months or so, each time leaving with nothing, cause most of it i heard+bought off the net already, and i was going in on their delivery day!
so today, i bought one, cause i felt like such a tit and a blagger (looking like someone wanting to while away their lunch hour)...it's OKish, but i had already kinda rejected it having listened to it on Monday off the web. :lol:

i feel like a twat when i leave a specialist record shop empty handed, there is always a feeling of guilt, because i like to support independent record shops, id rather see my money go to someone who cares, rather than the multi-national money grabbers such as virgin & hmv. ive noticed that the feeling of guilt grows in an independent record shop when either nobody is in the shop but you and the store owner, or you have asked for a shit load of vinyl to be pulled out. i dont like to feel like i am wasting somebodys time, and there is a high level of pressure to come away with at least 1 record, even if i do find the record average. the bad thing is i dont play records that i find average. and i end up either giving away the average records i buy or selling them for a small fraction of the price.

i guess its a matter of just been brave. maybe im too soft? maybe i care about music too much? who knows, the funny thing is, i probably wont change. :?

Spot on. Pressure grows with less people. And the pressure fcukin' peaks, too, if you spin out a live set on the decks in the store. I'm mean, really, the person workin would turn green if you mixed up a set, and then left without buying (assuming you've not developed a friendship already). Now that I think of it, there is one indy store, round here, where lots of people come and go, and I feel free to listen and leave, no prob. But one on one, I'm fcuked, and can't hang too long without scoring a winner. Mind you, if you find the goods right away, then your laughin'. Can take your sweet-ass time cause you know everyone is gonna leave smilin'.

I've met a right few miserable bastards in the shops, and never figured how any attitude was supposed to help the scene, or sell records. But, now, I think, and hope, the internet will help to change alot of this. :)

not i think all records hop staff are miserable bastards because some of my good mates work in records shops and they aren't miserable
in fact i love records shopping it's great.

its the internet bit i don't really like.

i've had the misery of horrible shop staff though too many times and sympathise with any of you who have to shop somewhere because they have good tunes but you can't stand the staff.
i used to do that at a certain london store (choci's) and the staff there drove me mad they were so rude to everyone unless they new you
and that's just not on in my book.

i have been to choici's when i visited london... this store looks crap and anyway they had really bad records at the time.

then ive been to tag records and they were very nice !!

im probably dumb to do this, but id the staff is bad, then i dont go to a shop, i know i can find their stuff on the web... :( so in this way the web kills the shops...

but the webstores will never replace some good atmosphere shop, and i would prefer to pay 1 euro more by record to have nice dudes in front of me instead of a screen.

You can't beat going into a shop though (not HMV - their techno selection's always shite) and pawing through a stack of new vinyl. You're much more likely to stumble across a gem you might have missed otherwise. Having said that, buying through the web means you can get pretty much exactly what you want at your own leisure.

yeah, this has happened to me too, i think adjustments to the eq and headphone volume play a massive part in this.
