now its time for a change!

im starting a track in ableton 5.1 and a large number of vst pluggins and reaktor 5.1


i like to listen your coments about the best softwares :)

logic 7, live 5, got various other vst's and au's but use them as the logic plug'ins sound better, and various pieces of hardware


if your using pc i'd recommend cubase or nuendo, live is great for live but i personally wouldn't use it as a sequencer.

Logic 7, Reason 3 (When forced to) Ableton for live use.

I dont really use a lot of VST's, logics own sounds are more than usable with a fair bit of playing with :D

As well as a Waldorf pulse, and my Microkorg.

All on a Mac

live is great for live but i personally wouldn't use it as a sequencer.

i just changed from cubase to ableton, and id say the sequencer is better in ableton. if you have a midi controller you can get the guts of the tune recorded on the fly and the change it up after. choppage is also much easier in ableton, coz when you split a wave in cubase you can sometimes get a nasty click or lose the very start of the sound.

ableton autofades each piece of audio making moving waves around much easier.

automation in cubase is much harder too. i never got the waves plugins to automate, whereas you can just record in ableton and go to the drop down menu in the arrangement view.

you know what.. i'm forever changing the sequencer and the way i work these days. sure, to really learn production i think you need to stick to one set up, but then once you are feeling confident, completely changing the way you work at random really helps you keep excited and fresh. just grab another seq you are interested in and learn it :)

I don't think that's necessarily true Chris.

It's certainly not a very "punk" attitude - and I reckon Techno has more in common with Punk than anything else.

Don't get me wrong, I love hard, tight and clean Techno, but I also like the odd T. Raumschmiere-esque banger from time to time.

Attitude can sometimes make up for technical expertise.

Is this the equivalent of junglists drawing links between dnb and jazz? That always boggled me - bunch of accomplished musicians jamming on the fly is about as far from a guy in a room hacking away with a sequencer as you can get.

It's sort of weird. The other dance music genres add "tech" to the front of a subgenre name to add credibility. Meanwhile, techno's looking up to punk.

It's almost as if dance music is somewhat ashamed of it's own heritage; that deep down, even enthusiasts believe that it's not really legitimate music because (mostly) no-one's playing real instruments.

It's somewhat appropriate; the Sex Pistols admitted outright that they and the genre they had made was a cipher, and from a certain point of view, so is music made of samples and effects.
