is it necessary?? ive gotten into the habit of bangin a Waves C4 and a VintageWarmer on the master as a standard but the more i think about it, the more i think i shouldnt need this. am i losing a precision in sound by doing this??

I dont think its so bad to do such a thing.
I have my own little Mastering chain that I will usualy apply to my tracks before I send them out or put them on here, If any tracks get taken off me I will send it unmasterd but for sending out ect or even just for my own pleasure when playing the track back I will do my own shit attempt at mastering.
I never do it while im making the track tho, I try to get the mix as good as I can without it(just turning the fukker up realy loud now and then instead I find can help)

Get your mix spot on without it.

i usually do a bit of DIY mastering for playing my tracks out but i always keep an unmastered version for the day simon cowell comes calling.

Get your mix as tight as you can without any compression.
Then, when its as good as it gets, go to town on it and make it shine.
