This topic is about efx/drum seq/melody ... general minimal/melody prod. tips./tricks.

1. short delay on hats (about 240ms with low feedback) will give u the "out of tempo" efx, almost every minimalistc song have this trick.

2. some bits/sam. rat. reduction on some instruments

3. stutter/rettriger on some parts (ableton evenlope @ sample offset can help a little bit)

4. weird quantization (1/128 - 1/256) on some "background" instruments (again, ableton can help with this)

let's put some tips/tricks on this topic...

how do you quantize at that resolution in ableton???

1. put the mouse above the "loop brace"
2. click
3. drag up/down to adjust the zoom/quantize

Don't over compress, keep the dynamics and make full use of the stereo field.

Try using simple melody lines and then use polyrhytmic filtering patterns over them, so the rhythmn and melody stay the same but the texture and tone keeps dynamic and interesting.

Sculpt your kicks rather than using samples.

Shuffle. Gotta have a bit of shuffle.

Use less.
Every element should be produced to absolute creamy beauty.

yeah i agree w/ steve, dont go overboard with sounds, that'll also make your mix sound like crap

also layering works beautifully
