This is not a cop out answer but you should buy what you feel
comfortable as there is no one machine that makes every thing amazing, I
come from a hardware point of view so I cannot begin to advise you on
event stuff, personally I prefer Eventide, Lexicon, Focusrite and I use
VST but for sequencing only. That is my way, but it doesn't mean it the
best way. Good Luck.

Well, that's good to see. I think fac can be forgiven for what he thought... Clarke is hardly famed for his friendliness now, is he?! And don't tell me, "oh, but he replied to an email, or is cool to talk to"...that's fine, but the other hand the fact is that he can be very ignorant with people sometimes, something I've seen many times. Anyway, I've never thought less of him, have usually found it quite amusing in the end, he wouldn't be Dave Clarke if he didn't have the bit of attitude or blunt expressions.

Anyway, enough of that, gonna listen to these new Dave Clarke tracks :)

Yeah, just listened there... was a little dissappointed to be honest. 1st track was ok, second one didn't do a lot, apart from use the Aphrohead remix drumloop over "Dark Matter".

Yeah, I managed to get "Dark Matter" 2nd time around when it was released on Reload... one of my fave Mills tracks.

If I didn't already have "Dark Matter" I'd probably be blown away by the second one, it is an awesome acid line after all... but really it just reminded me of that time Fergie ripped the Horsepower hook line for that dodgy Cheeky Biscuits label... it's just too big a rip for me to really like, doesn't display too much invention. That said I'm sure it'll go down well in a club, which is the aim. It's funny though, I've played "Dark Matter" out before and no-one ever asked "What's that one?", I bet if I played this shinier bootleg version there would be people wondering what the hell it is!

I sometimes really like bootlegs or techno tracks with hints of older tracks, Frankie Bones in particular does it very well.

Mills is not happy about this "Dark Matter" thing at all. Its been "a complex case of remix hell" as he described it. He made these edits for a New York label "Undertow": http://www.discogs.com/release/66564 and http://www.discogs.com/release/345178 (second one being a dubious release already). The thing went on to some italian label ULR http://www.discogs.com/release/66917 without clearance and ended up on Re-Load (known for some very dubious business practises, MUCH worse than R+S at their "shady" times). Some of the Re-Load guys took the liberty to "remix the remix" (in other words, **** around with unlicensed material) and pressed up this: http://www.discogs.com/release/31984
This whole (as it seems ongoing) story is the main reason why there are only a handful Jeff Mills remixes out there. Here is a pretty awesome one: http://www.discogs.com/release/38406
He decribed the whole story some years back on his site (there was a kind of forum for a while until spammers and playerhaters took over)

i love how there are several bigger names who obviously havent realised just how shady this release is supporting it, the irony being the more this bootleg saga goes on, the less likely it is Mills will do any remixes, great!

eyeswithoutaface
17-08-2006, 12:06 PM
considering the first track is a strange remix/rework of Clarke's Aphrohead remix, id place a bet that he played his original version. I cant see Clarke supporting a record that boots one of his friends so blatently. But maybe everyone is giving up on their morals these days? who knows

ds2

no i'm not, but not because i disagree with it or anything.

i've stocked clones, p, killabite, player etc in the past so it'd be a bit hypocrytical not to stock this one. it came out when i was sorting the new website out and wasn't ordering anything new in.

i wonder if mills is still playing the clones releases...

i love how there are several bigger names who obviously havent realised just how shady this release is supporting it, the irony being the more this bootleg saga goes on, the less likely it is Mills will do any remixes, great!

I'm sure lots of people know the origin of the samples, but would just play it because they like it. And look at Ben Sims, he's built his production career on ripping other people's loops - no-one has ever really called him shady. Mills has probably played the Killabites, and he got Sims to remix one of his tracks too.

It is a little cheekier this one, but I don't think this Rewerx 12" is going to sway Mills further away from doing remixes, the fact is he doesn't really do them anyway and probably has no intention to do many more, regardless of a bootleg that's doing the rounds.

Maybe Mills should make his catalogue open to some producers to remix, rather than exclusive 100 copy releases and all that crap. A proper double pack or album from a variety of producers.

well i was just gauging from what t-dj posted, a strong insinuation that this saga has been going on for a while and plays a big part in why there are not many mills remixes about, and from the horses mouth too going from t-djs post. I understand clearly that other's are morally no better at times than this rewerx record, but that's another matter, if someone started a ben sims rip off or not post im sure there would be similar replies to this thread from similiar people, just a thought....

judging from some of the comments on the rewerx website, alot of people actually dont know the origins of the samples, admittedly it seems its the younger generation who dont know the confusion... i quote one reply as "thanks for inspiring me", which just made me laugh out loud... another saying "nice and fresh" which made me laugh even more

ive never said it wont sound good when played over a big rig, i just think this is too much a blatant rip to get over it really, just my opinion, not gospel or anything. I just think if someone is going to go to the effort to cause this much hoohaa then why not just put their energies into something way more positive like new material, or maybe the person behind it is uncapable of coming up with their own material, which somehow makes it even less acceptable for me personally.

i dont think it was ever a case of they are going to make alot of money on this either, it's the moral viewpoint thats the issue here and some agree with it, some dont, that's just life really

not that i can see it ever happening but i know for a fact ten years down the line if i noticed one of my releases blatently pulled in this way i would be beyond fuming, as i dare say most other producers on here would too, or at least id like to think so

eyeswithoutaface
17-08-2006, 03:28 PM
i also like the idea that someone like mills should open up their back catalogue for remixes, especially if they want to stop things like this happening, not that it will cease this kind of activity, but surely if there were remix competitions or something along those lines then people might think twice.... or not, this is techno afterall

:)

Sunil
17-08-2006, 03:55 PM
Yeah, I wasn't mad on this release either for reasons kinda similar to yours, but for a certain crowd it works and it probably shouldn't be getting singled out for criticism too much in terms of the morals of the producer etc. Not when you have Hertz, Cave and co. doing it on a regular basis. This record it seems, is this producer's first bootleg 12" so it's not as bad a labels like P series who have a stack load of releases, and have probably sold a lot more.

eyeswithoutaface
17-08-2006, 03:57 PM
yeah definately, but it's only getting singled out because there was a discussion started, and with some strange views aswell, i mean people thinking its dave clarkes label and what not.

Yea thats super f****ing cheeky especially from re-load putting on both originals too, iam not sayings its correct but leaving yourself open with a 100 only serious when your mills is a bit silly though, it just screams out "boot" i know you should be able to do 50 if you want, but at jeffs status iam afraid this is the stuff you going to have to put up with. It may even have a knock on effect though as hes not released too much it might start pulling fresh faces towards his back cat.
