i have been playing this stuff for years and everytime i play it there is a very good response, i feel this is the new sound of techno and my new label "GHETTO FABULOUS" will reflect this but after reading a thread of how some people think the way techno is going i thought i'd ask the question " what do yous lot think about ghetto tech?"

You've been playing it for years and you also feel this is the new sound of techno?!

Yeah, I love ghetto techno... at this stage of the game though I don't think it's going to be serving up anything too extraordinary, not unless the real ghetto people come up with new stuff to say, and the overall production style shifts around a lot.

I liked what Bissmire was doing up to a point with the hard ghetto sound, but that lost me a while back I have to say. Haven't heard too much ghetto stuff this year. One guy I really like is DJ Nephets, but again, haven't seen much from him of late.

I like it and throw the odd ghettotech tunes in with techno & gets the crowd's attention when lyrics like , " tongue..& lick...all over my clit.. " boom out the soundsystem! It's a bit of fun & a nice contrast to the sound I play.

The sample is in so many tunes. I'm sure it was used by Sterling Moss a few years back. I think the original tune was by Dj Isaac & was called " face down ass up " .

2 Live Crew makes more sense than Isaac but that's the oldest example I know of. I've always liked " freaks on hubbard " by DJ Rush & " Just Ride " by Dave Clarke. Oneday I'll get around to making a ghetto track just for the fun of it.

it's hardly new in techno though is it? there's been booty stuff around for well over decade, dave clarke for example was at his best in the mid 90s when he was hammering the dance mania stuff.

i used to spend a fortune on that old chicago stuff and some of the detroit stuff too, those early dj assault 12s were awesome till they split up.

from judging what you played at glade, i dont think you play real booty? Just sampled booty with a pounding beat over the top. These sorts of records obliterate booty music.

There was a really full on schranz face down ass up - think I remember rowland playing it at glade.

Prefer the DJ Funk & Dj Vialgo version - has a squelchy little bassline on it. Rude tune

Yeah, I like ghetto tech but can't cope with a whole set of the stuff. Very quickly gets too repetitive.
Dj Slugo, deeon, funk - all make some class tracks. Best used chucked in with other types of techno though.
There's only so many tracks you can listen to prasing dat booty, booty, a whole lotta booty, booty booty etc etc

chicago hard house was around a decade before the "uk" hard house was around, in fact i used to play what was known as hard house and that was about 6 years before the first pheonix rising release which aparently was the first hard house track

ghetto tech has been around for longer than half the current producers in techno! nothing new about it, some amazing stuff around, and some utter, utter garbage, like most off-shoots of techno, but certainly nothing new

and yeah ghetto tech isnt hard house beats with a compulsory "ghetto" vocal over it

proper ghetto tech check Slugo, Dj Hyperactive, Dj Funk, Skitzo etc etc

eyeswithoutaface
02-09-2006, 11:07 PM
yeah people need to stop getting confused with that face down ass up thing, its a sample thats been on ****ing loads of things but more noticably the awful remixes with clowns like anne savage etc on it. Absolute pile of toss.

it's not coming into its own only now at all, what a strange thing to say, people have been dropping ghetto bombs in their sets for as long as i can remember. Ive seen Dave Clarke do nearly full on ghetto/booty (its the same thing guys come on) like over 8, 9 years ago and pretty much any techno dj worth their salt have been using ghetto tracks in their sets since techno practically began. The newer influx of harder stuff like Bam Bam and the 50hz crew have been at it a few years even now aswell, dont understand all this ghetto is the future of techno stuff, very strange

The problem for me with Ghetto Tech has arisen because,as has been said, you would find maybe one good release of this type in the shop and go, 'great, I'll buy that...!' n all the rest weren't any where near as good....

Then you would go to the party n everyone else had had the same idea... You've got to play it, thats why you bought it...

So once you been in the party for 15 hours or so you are pig sick of hearing the same bloody thing n that spoilt it for me...

Little_Fella!

For me, the whole point of ghetto tech / ghetto house, is that its nimble, bouncy, cheeky... suggestive.. when theres a massive bashing hardtechno beat all the way through it it stops being ghetto and starts being... umm hard techno? Agree on all the ole 130bpmish dancemania stuff, shame most of the production was so poor, the last few dancemanias were awesome too, it was all speeded right up but still with that raw 808 funk in there . . .a more recent must have (must be a few years old by now tho) was on NES records, by Bitch Ass Darius. Absolutely rufff, pure booty, but with ingenius use of samples including bootified cuts from milli vanilli, steve winwood and even chas n dave!!! sounds cheesy, but its actually wicked, all the afore mentioned samples are totally in context and you hardly realise what they actually are. .

eyeswithoutaface

well there are as many sub-divisions within ghetto as there are other genres, people will all have their own view of whose ghetto and whose not outside of the undeniably ghetto producers such as Slugo, Funk, Hyperactive et al. Ignition Tech have that raw sound certainly, very simple and alot of sampling going on with booty vocals and the Player series speaks for itself, whilst it's a little tired for me personally now. It's fair to say Punish has a small role in that side of things too with the sexual conotations and hard rawness that alot of the early Punish records had to them.

It really isnt a side of techno that will get swept up and rinsed out like schranz or minimal or something, there is always something too niche about it and certainly over here in the UK and Europe, in the more "mainstream" techno clubs whole sets of this stuff dont always go down well, unless the Dj is of exceptional skills like Dj Godfather or someone similiar. Deeon is supposed to be unbelievable on the decks too, alot of energy and flair is needed when this is your sole sound as for the average all round techno bod, 2 hours of "bang that ass" does wear somewhat thin.

So i dont think anyone needs to worry about it getting overdone, and on the flipside i wouldnt be throwing all my eggs into one basket hoping the sound gets really big as i just dont see it happening.

Total devastation when the right dj drops the right track though. I used to love scratching and juggling with copies of "Tear Da Club up" and various other really raw early projex records. Deadly

I played at Sankey Soaps in '02 for like 100 people. Thats the only time I played in UK. I think Deeon has a couple times, but long ago. I can get the details from him.
