hard drive partitions

ive just got a new hard drive for my laptop, and wondering about partitions. Im thinking of making a 30 gig partition for samples only, with the other 70 for general use, ie where all the music programs are going to be stored.
any thoughts?
should i create other partitions... one for my own samples and another for purchased samples. one for presets, or anything else for that matter...
any ideas appreciated

i'd say your first idea is the best way, have one partition for windows and program files, then another for your samples and documents.

depends really, you have to look at how many programs your going to have installed, how big each one is, how big your os is etc.

Get a seperate harddrive for you samples. They are so cheap now that there really isnt a reason for not having one.

yeah but its in a laptop.
if the cpu is overloaded completely, isnt the usb connection one of the first things windows drops?
i remember having a bit of trouble with it before..

Yeah, id partition it off. Another thing you could do is create 3 partitions. 1 for the basic os, 1 for programs, 1 for samples and storage. This means you can do a full os reinstall and know you wont lose any data. Check how much room all your samples and stuff take up at the moment and then make a guess on how much more space you will need in that partition in the near future, then partition it acordingly.

i have about 15gb set aside for Windows... that should be more than enough.
Then one for Audio, one for Progams & Storage..

if possible create a Ghost Image of a healthy windows drive, saves a full reinstall. its a cunt sometimes to re authorize every plug in

i reckon a bit more for programs...depends tho.. if you ever get stuck you could just put some on the audio drive i spose.

tbh tho, a friend runs programs as well as streams audio from his USB hd... so you might get a away with it, just as long as its not everything.
