Which reverb?

Hallo

I know there's a few reverb threads around, but could use some more pointers.

I'm not very good with reverb. Usually just whack a bit on things to tie them together, or to give synths a bit more authenticity.

And I'm pretty stuck with the RV7000 in Reason, which to me sounds better than everything else I've got. And given that its built into reason, its not a helpful favourite to have.

Mainly use the Wavez reverbs and the native reverb.

Anyone got any tips/recommendations on which verb to go for?

How do you use reverb, why, where etc?

Reverb can really smack your CPU, so I'd say the ideal is to get outboard or a dedicated DSP (UAD-1 / Powercore) to run reverb on.

If that's not an option, convolution reverbs are getting more and more popular these days.

Stuff by PSP looks good, though I've never had the pleasure in practice.

I'm usually quite happy with the Waves stuff.

save the money and get a dsp, since I've got me powercore I've never looked back, the verb is luuuvrly and you also get mastering plugins that are actually upto the job (although I'm not yet tho).

Also you can plonk two verbs in yer project and still have the power left to actually do something useful, and don't forget the great eq's you get with them as well. I got the firewire compact for 400 quid, I think they're still that now, for what you get it's an absolute steal.

I can't comment on the Powercore but the UAD-1 is incredibly good.

From what I can make of it, the main difference is that Creamware provide an SDK so anyone can make plugins for their card. Universal Audio only allow certain people to write plugins.

Personally, I prefer the open model on ethical grounds, but I must say the quality of the UAD plugs is incredibly high.

yeah, i got the UAD-1 card and the Realverb Pro and Dreamverb are awesome! I only use those reverbs for my tracks. Also the Plate140 plugin is mean too, but I only tried the demo version of that.

Waves IR for me.... there is even an 'efficient' version when you install it, that isnt as heavy on the CPU

My word goes to Wizoo W2. Lovely reverb, not that hard on CPU as Waves IR, but still convolutioun with some nice impulses and top sound quality.

Luxonix LFX-1310

Low CPU use, only three pots to worry about per effect, sounds good, makes stacking effects a no-brainer. It's pretty much the final word on effects in general, IMO - everything else makes a mountain out of a molehill. And it's free. :)

There is a nice freeware convulution reverb called SIR. You can load different impulses into it you can download loads of these. Whats nice about it though is that you can load any sample as in impulse so its actually quite useful as a creative effect. It got listed as an essential plug in in sound on sound magazine so worth downloading.

Variverb Pro is really good and the demo restrictions are very very pleasant and kind:

got to be either Liquidverb or Timeworks Reverb 4080L for me. The Liquid effects bundle is just delicious, the verb being the standout. Give's a lovely creamy reverb, i absolutely love recording my spanish guitar through it for other projects i do with mates, its just beautiful. The Timeworks verb is alot sturdier if that makes sense, feels more solid and gives a denser feel and atmosphere, sounds lush on pad's and synths especially

Does anyone else hate the waves ones ? I've never used one and liked it ... :( Shame, the rest of the waves stuff is great.

Actually IR-x or whatever the convolution one is called is okay but Trueverb and the other one that comes in the gold pack sound worse than digidesigns D-verb to me...

ALtiverb is the King of reverb. I have never heard anything so beautiful.

although I now have to upgrade my PC to use it. It is totally worth it though.
