FRIDAY 4TH MAY

LIVE + EARTH: GROUNDED PRESENTS
DAVE CLARKE // GEOFF TICEHURST

NEUTRAL: SIMPLE SOUNDS TOUR
SPIRIT CATCHER (LIVE)
MIKE MONDAY
WILL SAUL
PEDRAM

Live and Earth become one for a Bank Holiday Special, as we welcome the baron of techno to the arena, one of the great electronic innovators, Dave Clarke. In Neutral Plug regular Will Saul brings the best new tunes from his Simple Records stable with a DJ set from Mike Monday and a live show from Spirit Catcher…

‘I maybe established but I’ll never be establishment.’ These are the words of the Brighton born baron himself, Mr Dave Clarke. Raised on early hip hop, post punk and Visage, Dave has always been the perennial outsider and a formidable presence in British techno since the early 1990s.

Clarke’s influence has remained unbuckled by fads or trends while his ideas have stretched the template of dance music into regions few thought it would go. His acclaimed ’Red’ EPs, debut long player ’Archive 1’ and most recent ’Devil’s Advocate’ have continually upped the techno ante, slamming it into the future. Likewise for his numerous remixes for other key players such as Slam, DJ Hell, Green Velvet and Zombie Nation.

The man’s DJ sets are awe inspiring displays of genre splicing, throwing in ghetto tek, electro, tech funk and Detroit booty bass. Mixing up mechanical pulses with a broody electronic funk, his skills behind the wheels combine blistering scratching with intense electronics. His ’World Series’ mixes of illustrates just how breathtaking he can be when he’s deep inside the mix…

It’s not often the Live and Earth rooms are blended together. Erol Alkan and Laurent Garnier are the only jockey sluts to have received the honour so far… After this session other players just aren’t going to sound the same. Let the rave commence…

While Dave Clarke wrecks serious damage upon Live and Earth we have one of the best fledgling electronic labels taking over Neutral for your pleasure. Simple Records is led by one of our favourite guest’s at the Plug, Will Saul. His label locks down on deep, futuristic house, techno and disco with flashes of soul and irresistible melodies which spin your ears back to the grand old days of Detroit. As well as his own tracks, including 'Cliff' 'Mbira' and 'Pause', the constant evolution of the label has witnessed Phonique, Mike Monday, Jesse Rose (as Content), King Roc and Will's studio partner Tam Cooper joining the core roster. Remixes have also been commissioned from the talented likes of Mathew Jonson, Isolee, Konrad Black and Jimpster.

Spirit Catcher are the night’s live attraction, a Belgian duo consisting of Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet. Their sound is born of a bouncy tech funk which’ll have your spine writhing with electronic basslines. With releases on Crosstown Rebels and F-Communications, incendiary shows at Fabric and their ’Night Vision’ album to be birthed on Ralph Lawson’s 20:20 Vision (home to the massive ‘Erotic Discourse’ courtesy of Paul Woolford/Bobby Peru) their rise appears to be unstoppable…

Mike Monday’s ‘Smorgasbord’ LP from last September was one of the most acclaimed long player’s of 2006. Ten years in the making, it possessed a spark of flair which other operators within dance music have been unable to match when it comes to the debut long player. Taking in everything from his trademark squelchy house to more ambient synth led beauties ‘Smorgasbord’ is an eclectic beast glistening with surprises. Expect jacking house electronics and any other beats this bespectacled inventor has dug up for the evening…

Last but by no means least will be Simple Records head honcho and overseer of Aus offshoot, Will Saul. Simple is one of 2007’s most hotly tipped labels with this Plug date being one of a series of massive Spring parties being held across Europe. Expect deep, driving, house, techno and breaks from Will. Meanwhile keep your eyes peeled for fireworks from him and his label through out the year…
