I am just wondering if you guys compress your bass before you side-chain it to a kick drum?

Ok, maybe I should rephrase the question slightly!
When side chaining the bass to the kick drum would you compress the bass before on its own, and then side chain?

Nealry always sidechain the bass for a clean sound.
It doesn`t have to pump obviously if you know what you are doing.
I compress the bass, then use a Band insert with a sidechain compressor in it, and set it so I only sidechain the lower regions.
Usually about 200hz down.

I usually use a fat kick with a long tail, have that sidechained to the bass, and then group the kick and the bass and compress them.
