View Full Version : Surround Sound System

After hearing Speedy J's new video and hearing a few things along the way, I've decided I want to get into producing in Surround Sound. But before I go the whole hog and buy a studio speaker system, I feel it's much more important to get a good home system, so that I can start to understand how it all works in films and in a lounge-based senario.

TBH, I want a bit of a bargain here if I can find one, but I really don't know much about home theatre and what names to trust. If it was down to my natural Yorkshire instinct I would probably nip down to ASDA, buy something for 150 quid in the Jan sales and then get pissed off in six months that it was a waste of cash and upgrade to something better.

But no, I want to get something good here. Not too expensive, but at least half decent. Anything in bargain territory would obviously make me very happy too. Budget - anything from 200 to 500 quid. And I don't need big ass speakers, cause the lounge is only small - you'd have problems swinging a cat in there let alone adding four 3 meter high stacks of speakers heheh

Any help would be lovely.

I'd love a visual demonstration of the cat-swinging to better visualize the space in question :-)

oh dear...after 30 minutes of this bullshit i'm starting to think this is a bit more than just getting a nice all-in-one system and off you pop. especially if you're into sound.

hmmm.. 'which' magazine recommend these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Denon-DHT1356XP-Silver-Receiver-Speaker/dp/B000BVGWH8/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197909347&sr=8-1

but they're white and they look shite.

alot of ppl recommend BOSE...

then I found this place:

then my head became fried and i gave up.

oh god this is gonna be a nightmare :hissyfit:

I find the problem with looking on places like AV Forums is that you can get 50% of people saying a piece of kit is amazing, and the other 50% say it is rubbish.
Before long you're on a journey that takes you through 50 pieces of equipment, and by the end of it, you're still none the wiser as to what to buy.

I'm not an expert by any means, but what you need to consider first is :
What other equipment do you have at the moment?
Do you want just an Amplifier and a set of speakers?
Or do you want an all in one system, eg, DVD and Speakers combo?

I got a 5.1 Panasonic upscaling DVD system with the wedding vouchers, and it's really good.
But I'm rapidly running out of inputs for it.

Not too clued up on the home theatre thing, but if you do get into it, a book by 'bob owsinski' called 'the mixing engineers handbook' has a decent amount of information about mixing in surround sound.

don't bother, five speakers confuses the hell outta me anyways, besides what's wrong with stereo?;) We still haven't got that in the clubs yet, mind you it's only 2000 and f*&^in 8 lol

Get a big fat dennon amp and a kef speaker package with an active sub... job done.

Then watch the beginning Saving Private Ryan and 28 Weeks later to see how good it sounds :o)
