well I gave it a chance and on the first listen it's nothing compared to the mix MITA posted above especially 1. Crooked One - Let Us Pray (dub) 4. Crooked One - Annilhilation (Starksound) , there are some nice sahdes of reagge which i like but for that i will listen to reagge...
I would suggest : http://www.ragandbonerecords.co.uk/mixes/noyeahno_sickstep_mix_july_07.mp3
And here's the list of tracks:
1. Roots Dyed Dark (Skream remix) - Mark Ashken - Leftroom
2. The Flu - Kromestar - Marxmen Dubs
3. The Goat Stare - Loefah - DMZ 6
4. Disko Rekah - Loefah - Deep Medi Musik
5. Annihilation - The Crooked One - Starksound 1
6. Atlas - Scan One - Combat 14
7. Archetype - Innasekt - Red Volume 002
8. Dolls Eyes - Sasquatch - Senseless 3
9. Warehouse - Tes la Rock - Mode 02
10. Apocolypse - Kommanasmuk (dub)
11. Prism - Starkey - Starksound 2 (dub)
12. So Strong - Mackoall
13. Omerta - Sasquatch - Senseless 4
14. More thank Likely - Wifi of the undead (dub)
15. Music is a Weapon - Aaron Spectre - Rag & Bone 16
16. Come to Life - Drop the lime (dub)
17. Claws Theme - Tigerbass
18. Ladies Roll - Cari Lekebusch - HPX 05
19. Retarded Ep - Non Stop DJ’s
20. Dem Nah Like Me - Ghislain Poirier - Shockout
21. Cannot be Straightened - Bass Clef - Blank Tapes
22. Bounce - Starkey - Starksound 2 (dub)
23. Boxfresh Ep - DJ Ganta

27. Saymorefire - Aaron Spectre - Rag & Bone 16
................
10. Apocolypse - Kommanasmuk (dub)
11. Prism - Starkey - Starksound 2 (dub)
Prism - starkey - is the song. Love the transition between Apocolypse and Prism. When Prism takes over that's when the magic happens. I guess for me at this moment this would be a good way to put it: "There are many stars in this mix but Prism is more like the sun, and when the sun shines that stars disappear."
20. Dem Nah Like Me - Ghislain Poirier - Shockout
21. Cannot be Straightened - Bass Clef - Blank Tapes
Also really enjoy "dem nah like me" sounds great, gets me movin' and it's cool. Number 21. is different then any other track on this list imo, every time I hear it I like it more and more..

djshiva
07-03-2008, 11:08 AM
it's funny, because as with all genres, the djs can shape the image of what people think of the genre as a whole.
for me, the width and breadth of dubstep right now is far-reaching, and not at all limited to the party-tune, dancefloor-smashing wobble business that people are seeing as representative of all dubstep.
some artists who are crossing techno/dubstep boundaries (or are just immensely good):
2562
pinch
appleblim
gatekeeper
kode 9
geiom
pangea
untold
shackleton
peverelist
overcast radio
mala (digital mystikz)
benga
likhan
TRG
bombaman
reso
skream
elemental
i could go on for days, as there are bigger names and also lesser known talent that are really pushing new sounds every day, it's just that those aren't necessarily what gets caned on the dancefloor.
evidently the last DMZ was pretty techno-influence heavy tho, by all accounts, so trust me when i say that dubstep may have some formulaic things happening within it, but those formulas DEFINITELY do not define the sound at all.
good places to find mixes:
www.dubstepforum.com
www.barefiles.com
i also gotta do some blatant self promotion and point to my last studio mix, Retrospection (http://www.blackoutaudio.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=54621&highlight=retrospection), as an example of what happens when techno and dubstep meet and have a smoke.
also peep my archives for my dubstep.fm radio show: http://www.dubstep.fm/djshiva
i tend to play all over the place with the radio show, so you never really know what's gonna happen, but i have been a techno girl for years, so expect that influence in a big way.
anyway, i just wanted to pop on here and let people know that there is pure gold in the dubstep scene, but it takes paying attention, as with any genre. every genre has its formulas, but no genre should ever truly be defined by them.

thats pretty much just summed up whats wrong with techno today.. tunnel vision .. what is techno anyway? and who's to say what can and can't be linked to it? Isn't that the whole point of it? alien sounds and styles..embracing new ideas and creating new angles.. Buddy Holly only knew 3 chords.. A,D and E.. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who's only into buddy holly whereas the music of buddy holly and the crickets make up a small yet important blip on the tapestry that is rock n roll..

Yep, thats what i was trying to say in my rambling lofty buddy hollyesque above post
Not to say that people have to like dubstep (or buddy holly)... It can be pretty generic and predictable as can any 'genre', but i've heard tracks that have knocked me for six and its influenced some producers of aforementioned 'techno' which is where it gets exciting as its another route to explore.. new territory, ideas and production techniques to be applied to other stuff. There are some tracks that I have heard so far on my 3 day dubstep adventure that sound a bit well, for lack of a better word... plastic. A little churned out. But you get that with every genre really. There are aspects of techno that sound a bit plastic too. You know when you hear a DJ caning a "filler" track. Timo Maas has a habit of doing it.

why would you detest any form of creativity? Personally there is stuff that I've heard people describe as dubstep that doesn't really jive with me, but that said there are also tracks that also people classify into the breakbeat/dubstep bracket that I quite enjoy, sometimes go mad fo'.
I don't see why one must judge dupstep by whole "genre" and not by the music they like which came out outta the bracket that is dubstep. imo it's so new it's not worth judging, call it like it is, say what you like say what you don't and give a reason why. One of the only holdbacks i can see is keeping it in its own genre and not developing it the way one should feel it needs to for them, making it UNIQUE.
I have dubstep tunes in my techno sets and it breaks it up very, very well.
And i really like Milanese's sounds.

and on the subject of dubstep, doesnt do a thing for me im afraid, i appreciate some of it for its production value's but as a genre i think its massively over hyped, but thats the same with alot of things, and just doesnt hit any buttons for me at all, much the same as drum and bass really
Thats just it, i missed all the hype. Im in south east Ireland and the only guy I know plays it lives in the same house as me.
I just got a giggly when i heard it on youtube. its the bass that gets me and that gritty feeling.

Now apparently there is already something called "Bassline" which is dubstep with 4/4 rhythms or something. I dunno, i really dont keep up to date with the latest trends/names etc i just like what i like
the only dubstep i suppose i listen to is the Voidloss and Villian set, again, mostly for the production values

i always appreciate your opinion dude. As being an accuarate barometer of what represents good taste musically. Yet again you have confirmed this belief.
I have been sent quite a few Dubstep mixes one by our mutual friend The Divide, which i listened to thoroughly out of respect for our friendship.
Luckily it was strong enough to survive the wasted hour i spent listening to it.
Basically it represents a safe medium for people who have no talent in mixing.

Creativity is creativity. Its not anyones fault except your own that all you have ever listened to/appreciated/bought/or mixed over the last 10 years has been Acid Techno.

glad you dig, but a fair bit of those were taken direct from the mastered wavs...so not sure where the lack of bass perception is coming from. the real question is...if i hadn't posted that it was an ableton mix, would you have heard it the same way? ;)
i purposely use ableton for dubstep because my one gripe about it is many of the tunes are based around "drop to drop" mixing (kinda like dnb), and i prefer the flow of techno layering, instant edits and geeky efx play myself.

Warping in ableton affects the bass region.... i coudlnt quote you any numbers or anything, but i can hear it. for sure...
i would guess there is some sort of phase manipulation by the stretching of the waveforms, around the 400 - 800 Hz area, which is where alot of the punch lies..
i could be totally wrong here...but all i know is that it does affect the sound

if it is warped in beats mode, there are definitely transient noises, and complex mode also does involve some degradation of sound. however, most of my stuff is warped in "repitch" mode, which does not have the same degradation of sound.

But he knows what im talking about.
i might run a digital label but the issues i have with vinyl are WAY more to do with the business model its been occupying in the years previous to this and the way they have crushed creativity at the expense of labels looking to fund their next release. By this i mean the more commercial end of the market. Not the good folks willing to put their money where their mouth is, in that respect massplank is 100% right, there are some superb releases on vinyl right now, more than there was before - simply because no-one is willing to risk the cash on hits that MAYBE will work.
thats how i see it anyway, id be interested if anyone else had an opinion contrary to this, genuine. BY heck id love to see it all vinyl again, i honeslty would.

Ok but when you say techno .. what comes to mind?
To me, artists that come to mind are : James Ruskin, Go Hiyama, Luka Baumann, Grovskopa, Dirty_Bass, Speedy J, Jeroen Liebregts, Reeko, Inigo Kennedy, Surgeon, CYP, rednox, Makaton, Regis, Female.... both for mixes and tracks... Now for these artists I wouldn't say that they exude staleness, quite on the on the contrary. I'm not always inclined to listen to these kind of sounds 24/7 like I used to, but they are my go to guys when I fell the urge to go nuts...

oh you big troll!
Dubstep has nothing got to do with the staleness of techno. People just enjoy it & are digging it the same way people dug techno & d'n'b when it was new. The production values in the early stuff was really really amazing (Loefah, Toasty, Hotflush Records, Vex'd, DMZ etc). Really top notch stuff. These guys are bass enthusiasts. Now there are tons of imitators who dont really have the same kind of standards, some producing crap music & some producing excellent music, which is making it hard to find the good stuff. But it was always the same situation with techno. C'mon there must be at least 3000 techno labels out there. All this talk about hype and bandwagon jumping is funny. We ALL jumped onto the techno bandwagon at some stage. If Surgeon hadnt jumped on the techno bandwagon in the mid ninties , well we wouldnt have had surgeon would we etc etc.

You really do have achip on your shoulder about this whole vinyl vs digital thing dont you man.
Why?
And you take it very personal when I talk about my preference for vinyl over digital formats. Why? Because I grew up listening to it, touching it and I love the sound of it & the bass is fatter and the highs are not as harsh. Sure its more expensive. But I love music & have not problems shelling out to have it in my hand. Vinyl definately moves me more emotionally. I cant describe it, but it has also go to do with the social aspect of it. If I am an abelton DJ how easy it for my mates to call around and have a mess with my setup? Also I stare at a computer screen all day at work. I dont like doing that for another 8 hours when I get home. etc etc
Would I be talking out my ass if i said that most producers on this site would reather have their music pressed to wax? But on the flip side how many of them buy wax? Nothing has changed for me. I'm still buying records. The digital age has given me the power to hear a hell of a lot of stuff I would never have heard before & listen to a track several times over before making that crucial decision to spend 10 euros. The days of walking into a record shop on payday and handing over a hundred quid to buy the ten latest bangers are over. Now I can have anything I ever wanted on vinyl. And Its thanks to the digital age that has enabled this.
I still ENJOY the music from digtal labels. I dont dismiss the music because of the format its on but I do have a preference.

For me, the best Techno has always gone around the houses and incorporated wildly different sounds.
Basic Channel brought dub into the mix. Tim Wright brought in two-step rhythms. CJ Bolland flirts with trance. T Raumschmiere has a punk edge. You can pull all of these elements and more into a Techno mix and create something cohesive, varied and unique all at the same time.
Dubstep is just another element for this.

The whole digital debate is very interesting for dubstep, because like D&B it's a primarily dubplate-based culture. Though on the other hand many of the key players fully embrace digital technology (CD decks and Ableton).
In fact, last time I saw Digital Mystikz they played a pretty much 100% CD set.

I think for me, i like the stuff because the bass truly excites me. you see, i want to make really good techno and what im doing at the moment is listening to other stuff to avoid tunnel vision and any stagnation that i may run into while producing.
