The original pioneer of Detroit Techno Derrick May brings with him legendary act Octave One for this their debut Hi-Tek-Soul appearance at Ministry of Sound. Playing alongside these two Detroit heavyweights is a firm Hi-Tek favourite Mr Stacey Pullen, representing the new generation of Techno DJs alongside its original heroes. The bar meanwhile plays host to Jim Masters, Krysko resident of Manchester’s legendary Warehouse Project and cosmic disco kid, Dom Chung.

Detroit Techno originator and head of Transmat records, Derrick May, brings his infamous Hi-Tek-Soul party back to Ministry of Sound for the first party of 2009. After an incredible two years at the club with guest appearances from Francois K, Ken Ishii, Derrick Carter, Quentin Harris, Faith, Giles Peterson, Kenny Hawkes, Kevin Saunderson, Technasia, Colin Dale and Rolando to name but a few. This next party raises the bar with another relentless line up showcasing the very best original and new Techno artists from either sides of the pond.

Derrick May, one of the original pioneers of the Detroit sound alongside Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig. Inspired by Yello and Kraftwerk, he began to make electronic music with Atkins and Saunderson while studying with them at Belleville High, Detroit. Recording either as Mayday or Rhythim Is Rhythim (occasionally in conjunction with Carl Craig) and generally on his own Transmat Records label, he went on to carve out a new vein in dance music that synthesized the advances of the electro movement with the more challenging end of the House movement - a music that defined "Techno". Early cuts such as "Nude Photo" and "The Dance", both on Transmat, were inspirational to many. However, it was the release of "Strings Of Life" in 1987 with its wide appeal to the house music fans of the 80s & 90s, simultaneously brought May his deserved acclaim and Detroit Techno to European club-goers. His parties here at Ministry of Sound are the only place to catch him in London, on one of the best soundsystems in the UK.

Coming over with him from the Motor City are fore runners of the so called ‘second wave’ of Detroit Techno, Octave One. Brothers Lawrence and Lenny Burden also occasionally going under the moniker Random Noise Generation. Debuting with “I Believe” on the monumental (10 Records) compilation “Techno 2: The Next Generation” (alongside Carl Craig, Marc Kinchen, and Jay Denham) in 1990. The brothers have released groundbreaking underground dance anthems on their own Detroit based record label, 430 West Records. These releases include Random Noise Generation’s "Falling in Dub", DJ Rolando’s “Jaguar”, Aux 88’s “My A.U.X. Mind”, as well as their own Octave One records: “Empower”, “Nicolette”, ‘The X-files”, “Meridian”, and ‘Siege”. Since 1990, the Burden brothers have released over one hundred records. 2000 brought the biggest Octave One release to date, "Blackwater". The track has appeared on over 70 compilation albums worldwide. It has been released domestically in 5 countries (US, UK, Spain, Germany, and Australia). The track has also been a favourite on the decks of some of the world’s best known DJs, Little Louie Vega, Danny Teneglia, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Jonathan Peters, Laurent Garnier, among many, many others.
For this exclusive London show they will be performing one of their infamous Live shows, their first UK appearance in 2009.

In keeping with the roster of talent from Detroit, a Hi-Tek-Soul favourite returns, step forward Stacey Pullen. Another name from the so called ‘second wave’ of the early 90’s he quickly established himself as one of genre’s finest. A man with a wealth of back catalogue, with aliases that include Bango, Black Odyssey, Kosmic Messenger and Silent Phase. Arguably one of the best guests we’ve had at Hi-Tek-Soul over the past few years. Famed for his open minded and eclectic approach to DJing he’s constantly tailor making his sets using his exclusive re-edits and unreleased productions.

Over in The Bar, Jim Masters; the man behind the now legendary BASE parties in the mid nineties that he ran with Carl Cox, headlines. Playing alongside Jim we welcome two northern clubbing heroes; Krysko, resident at The Manchester institution that is The Warehouse Project and Dom Chung resident at Liverpool’s premier party of choice Chibuku.


In the Loft we’re really excited to play host to two true Tech House innovators, “Evil” Eddie Richards who mixmag once labelled "Britains godfather of house and techno" and Dave Mothersole a man who was instrumental in defining and introducing the London Tech House sound to the world.
