View Full Version : Whats your techno scene like?
Hi guys/gals/lovers of the bang!
Just interested to see what the scenes are like abroad...is it all hard and banging? Is it a combination of "hardstyle" and techno?
Melbourne, for instance, is interesting to say the least! Hardstyle or Hard House *or, umm, shrugs* is pretty much at the forefront, although lately, we have played host *and tried* to cross genre things to lure the kids to the harder sounds of techno and it seems to be working...just a matter of time really...i plan to stage some strictly hard techno nights so hopefully the young party goers take to it...
But yea, very interested to hear what its like abroad...DSP has given me some insight into the Canadian scene, which is similar to ours here...
oh and i like this emoticon :rambo:
*apologies if this has been posted already but "the new guy" is bound to put a foot wrong sometime right? ;) *
great thread man, there might have been a thread like this but i havnt read it.
techno is not big here in calgary, canada.
that doesnt mean that people dont love it. they do.
in fact, there are only about 3 other dj's who play the kind of techno that i play. ya know, hard techno as in mark eg, london techno, wilson, speedy j etc...
not that i mind really, that just means when someone wants a techno dj (which is starting to be in demand now, yay!) they book me :)
we have a tight close nit scene, a city with about a million people, if you are a dj, you know all the other dj's. there is no real segregation between genres either. for example, an average party will display everything from house to trance to techno to drum and bass to breaks.
there are some great promoters out here who really care about the community. i am involved in alot of those events, as i think that helping to create a safe environment will help attract new people to the scene, in turn getting people into my music...TECHNO!
soon this city will love the techno, its really an underground sound out here, really fresh, which i love because for the most part, every single track i play nobody has ever heard before!
i am interested to see other cities scenes, i look forward to moving to australia at the end of the year, hopefully i can help be a part of the techno scene out there....
here in birmingham its quite vibrant.
yeah, the HH kids do their 345832094hour parties and after, after, after, after clubs (watch the death toll rise as these people hit their 40s) then there's of course theres the HOG and the JAM. one sick, hard and wonky, the other big room, stadium kinda techno. then theres stuart who gets to book all of the interesting people and, to be damn honest, does things which actually reflect the techno scene really well. he does diverse bookings from acid through to minimal, sorts out wicked back rooms and has a great rep with his clubbers.
theres tonnes of other stuff too, but if yer only talking techno............theres also, my minimal techno night on wednesdays in a swanky bar, and FHTs occassional nights of the more APOCALYPTIC TECHNO, good shit!!

I hardly go out clubing today. I never seem to find a club/DJ who plays my style, so instead I stay home and mix with mates.
Plus, I don't find drugs as a novelty these days. I blew my mind too many times... Plus clubs and that aren't the same 'euphoric' places as they used to be. Bias, jaded talk here. Valley of the lost souls at some places, people look through you cause they can't see shite as for being soo of guts, people dancing to sick synth rifts  What's the world coming to

Also I like the idea of crossing styles. A few producers / labels are doing exactly that, Natus...Composure.

London seems fairly quiet for techno outside of the squat party scene. Lost and Nuclear Free Zone are the only long-running techno club nights I can think of at the moment, although there's usually one or two each month as well.
There's tons of techno in the squat party scene though... probably half a dozen or more parties each weekend, the majority of which play techno in at least one room. Lots of rigs - Malfaiteurs, Manik, Stinky Pink, Tinkerbell, Tribe of Munt etc etc.
here in holland techno is becoming more and more popular, but the big partys like awakenings and partys from id-t are very mainstream nowadays. There is techno but i think at least 50% doesnt even know it's techno they're just having a good time there and listen to all kinds of electronic music.
Then you have the smaller partys which of course are much more underground wich i prefer (of course!?) and their number is also growing i think. Because holland is not so big (quite small actually) the 4 main cities (amsterdam, utrecht, rotterdam, the hague) are easy to reach if you live nearby 1 of them. And for the techno minded people there's always at least 1 good techno party in one of these 4 cities every weekend.
but it has to be said that in holland techno by far isn't as big as trance and/or hardstyle. But i think that's is a good thing and hopefully we keep it that way. It's better for the quality of the partys

As for Dublin, the scene seems nicely set up. We have a very good regular Thurday night club run by Electricity (Check out that .pdf of Anorak #5 on HardSignal homepage: read Giles Armstrong). Basically bring over people most people have never heard of, (Alexander Robotnik, Makaton, Agoria, Tachsi, The Hacker etc. ) so get a healthy mix of electro AND techno.
Have a more mainstream techno night opening on a Tuesday. And then a couple of odd-strings every second saturday. AND one-off gigs happening pretty regularly.
I thought we had it bad, but from everyone else is saying, we're spoilt!

in seattle techno is almost nonexistant. donald glaude plays some, but mostly of the more accessible variety, ala his buddy carl cox.
too much rock, too much trance for my tastes...but the weather is bleak enough that techno could really take off if introduced correctly.

Minneapolis, Minnesota USA
The scene is very weak here just as the rest of the U.S. at the moment. Though I feel its one of the top 3 cities for in the U.S. for techno at the moment. If you're into minimal techno, this town has a HUGE minimal techno scene. The minimal sales here at the record shops regularily outsell progressive house or jungle...the only one that really competes in house at the moment.
Events wise, there used to be a monthly going on here but thats been put on the backburner for the moment. We're working on starting up a new series of events beginning in March with Mark Broom. We have a small weekly on thursday nights here at a nice lounge where we beat it out all night. We used to get people like Carola, Lekebusch, Parisio, Vigorito, and Beyer here on a semi-regular basis but the main club called The Quest, their backers (Clear Channel) said no to techno. :(
Music-wise, this town is very inspired by Richie Hawtin. People here love all things trippy or twisted, but they also love to rock out. Lately the main sound is late-night techno ala Kanzleramt, Stewart Walker, Joel Mull etc. When people like to rock out here, they get into stuff from labels like Sway and Skunkworks. The schranz and glenn wilson records can be left at home, as this town isn't big on the compressed drum tools.
There's a ton of techno DJs here but only a few play out on a regular basis. Unfortunately, quite a few of the local DJs can't hold the decks together all that well, but the ones who do do it extremely well.
That's about it!

The Techno Scene is non existent.
Thank You.
Thanks for the insight ppls...keep em comin!
Is techno in its form becoming "yesterdays" sound? We are experiencing a change here in Melbourne as well and its hard to "educate" because people often go with what they know. No one has attempted to stand out from the crowd and do something new *well, not yet ;) but its happening very soon!* Then again, what is "something new"? We were already blown away over a decade ago so whats the new wave?

Liverpool - England
The scene here got a massive kick up the arse last year with a few new techno nights making a name for themselves, namely T-Funkshun. The boys behind T-funk have done their best to bring fresh, and i mean real fresh talent to Liverpool with names including:
Dj Bone
Mike Grant
Luke Solomon
Stacey Pullen
Surgeon
Regis
Chris Finke
all playing last year and totally rocking the club! There have been a few big upsets over the past year or 2, with the legendary Voodoo shutting down and Bugged Out's demise, and its safe to say that T-Funk is the number one techno night in Liverpool at the moment. There are a number of local Djs really flying the flag for Liverpool at the moment, with one being none other than my dj partner Brendan Long. He has impressed everywhere he went last year and the beginning of this year, he's been to Prague to play and has also played both Bugged out and the Voodoo NYE special. Also given a mention are again those T-funk boys, who not only run the club but happen to be superb Djs in their own right. It's a bit quiet on the production side of things, but there are a couple of local producers who are making waves at the moment, so fingers crossed!!!!
all in all i can see 2004 being a good year for Techno in the North West England!

LEEDS - ENGLAND
This city is fast becoming one of the best places for techno in the UK, imo. The demise of The Orbit was a bit of a downer at the time but since it closed the techno scene has really taken off. In the past couple of months we've had some outstanding DJ's ranging from Garnier to Craig - from Surgeon to Aux 88 Live and the next few months look even better.
Gaetek, Mark Broom, DJ Bone, Octave One, Oliver Ho, James Ruskin, 65d Mavericks, A Tresor Tour featuring Regis Live, Derrick May, Oscar Mulero, Paul Mac, Grovskopa, Robert Hood and Steve Bicknell are all due in the next couple of months.
A perfect place to live at the moment and with Liverpool just 1 hour away us Northerners are really spoilt for choice. The problem now is - where do I find the money to see all these lot.

Our techno scene here in Melbourne is quite good. There is quite a bit of variety in techno styles! There are one off club nights popping up all the time and some are really pushing new sounds which is great for the scene.
There's also a few monthly nights that play the harder stuff as well.
The thing is you have to find some of these nights as they don't blatantly advertise like the big commercial parties do.

Belgium,
Sorry for my bad English but I will do my best.
I’m a technohead for 8 years now and I saw it change from a new sound to a borring commercial scene. If people are spoilt than it sure is the Belgium clubbers.
With events like I Love Techno peeps had the chance to see the biggest names of the world in one evening a year. If you did a night with only one international name on it then it isn’t good enough for them. The big mass that you see on evnts like ILT are kids who want to **** themself up with xtc (cheaper than drinking a beer here) and go crazy on the “hype”.
A good thing is that this event is loosing people so the big hype is getting smaller again. After Clear channel took over they had bad comments of people who were into the music with their heart. Other events had to cancell dates an names because CC had exclusive contracts with them. That time 2 generations of techno grow in Belgium. Die hard small party nutheads and the big mass wanna be boom boom heads (who came from trance clubs because that scene is almost dead)
The smaller party’s are bringing the good sound now this days but the problem is that there are to many small party’s in one evening. We are killing each other wile the big once stay alive beacuses we can’t fight them with names. In one weekend there sometimes are 10 gigs in a small country like Belgium. But even here you have the problem that some concepts only started of to jump on the money techno train without interest in the music. But the old small concepts stay alive and the good fresh no money concepts survive.
You can get every kind of techno here in Belgium only the dark, broken beat stuff stays in dj’s there sleeping room. But I think this is changing these days when I see dj’s there charts lately. Let’s hope! So the music goes form hard tek parties to techhouse back to bleepy, minimal wicked tech sounds.
Then ther is the event kozzmozz. This one is going on for several years now. Started small, got big but changedagain. Lately this concept has changed his approach on the scene by putting up line ups with Surgeon, Ruskin, etc .... and keep it in a small old theater. In this case people who stayed away from mass events are united again and this results in one of the best bigger parties of Belgium also spending much time in the search for new young talents.
So don’t go to ILT because they **** up whole our scene and every support they get they longer stay alive and commercialise techno in a way it shouldn’t be done. :rambo:
Greetz unity and respect!!

DAYTON, OHIO = noth'n
unhealthy...the best djs don't get booked. its just the kids who've had decks 2 months that end up wrecking all night...aweful. every now and then a regional favorite will come through...and all will liven up for a night.
but before the night is over some dumb-ass kids start fighting...
We have (I think it still happens) a weekly showcase of local and regional talent at a place called The Nite Owl. It was re-dubbed the fight owl...
feking terrible.
Plus, the scene is saturated with drugs. Sure substance is part of the scene, but it didn't used to tbe THE scene. Now I don't think anyone cares about the music, rather they just want a place to take their e.
sorry to be soooo negative, but it really is a shame. I remember not too long ago when the scene here was healthy and fun and everyone knew everyone and partied and good music was important

Techno scene here is doing pretty well! Lots of kids interested in the sound and we have a few weekly/monthly events happening..
We get our share of headliners thru here as well, for instance I just saw DJ Rush, Marco Remus, and some locals at Zentra Nightclub, then a few months back was Carola/Vigorito @ Transit, then Adam Beyer and Hawtin @ Vision Nightclub..

in addition to what Pulze said about the belgian scene:
there still is a good scene, but it moved -to use a cliché expression- underground. You have to search a bit to find the wright parties.
Clear Cannel indeed made a mess of our scene in the last few years. Killed some good initiatives and putted nothing instead.
An other annoying thing is that everybody these days wanna throw parties or play dj. Not because they love music, but just because they love mainly themselves and need some attention.
And then you get an overkill, 15 parties on one night is no occasion anymore......if they all served quality, I would have no problem with that, but unfortunaltely, that isn't the case.
But.....after 12 years, I'm still enjoying myself in the belgian scene  and many times I realise myself that after all, living in Belgium is a good thing when you love electronic music. And when we are tired of the belgian scen, we just get in the car and drive to Holland

scene = student techno
i havent even bothered going to the nights here cos i know what sort they attract. people that think its cool to go to techno nights that don;t even really know what techno is.
firefly is doing well for itself, mixing it up between house breaks and techno but it is very studenty, so lacks the hard raw edge.
stealth opened recently and is being described as the fabric of the north. with a slogan like that its definately scaring the purists away. we got some nice little clubs up here, like the bomb. tiny place but quite cool, apart from the crap atmosphere due to extemely low ceilings (its built in caves)
i promote a night with some mates under the futuresound banner, called discipline. currently on hold as the club is being refurbished but when were back up and running we hope to get some nice undeerground techno on the go with breaks and electro rippin up the backroom
here i n calgary i just threw my first party
it was a small one, about 250 people
it was all techno in the main room, and triphop, live stuff, funk and breaks in the lounge.
it really went off. people were loving the techno. i realized if i want the techno scene here to take off, i cant just sit here and wait for someone to make it happen....gotta try something myself
we also do free illegal parties outside during the summer that are all techno, dark breaks and drum and bass too. first one is next week :)
people out here love techno, its growing, hopefully in the next few years we can start to see some actual techno jocks come out!!! the only ones who ever come here are chris liberator and dave the drummer and mistress barbara a few times....not that that is a bad thing, but i would love some more diverse headliners.....
you just gotta start small right?

With marjority of students being dragged into the Drum N Bass and Hip hop sence, which I also enjoy, it leave not so much room for techno IMO. Clubs are overdosed with students flavour and most bang bang punters go to the Monopoly club Dance Academy for their trance, okay Mark Eg comes every now and then to shape up some techno beats.
Just before I left for Amsterdam we had Glenn Wilson doing a Live Pa for Oorpi, and OBI djign as well. Five Shades of techno you can catch the legenery Dougie, who is monster of a dj, he singlehandedly forced me to keep up my skills.
I played at a lot of free parties around the Moor (One of the few national park in the UK), the site is surreal and the sunrise would just shift you into third gear and the police are always there to chat looking after the crew rather than shutting parties down.
I will leave Exeter and surrounding for Si the Sigh.

Its really slow here, I would say the techno scene is almost non-existant... but with enough effort a scene can exist anywhere. We've hosted Chris Liberator, Julian Liberator, Ant, and DDR over several events in the past 2 years. We're planning an event with Aaron Liberator right now for August. The kids really like techno and they eat it up at our events, but they don't hear it after that and their interest fades, because we are pretty much the only ones doing these events.
i realized if i want the techno scene here to take off, i cant just sit here and wait for someone to make it happen....gotta try something myself

As the rest of US, there is no regular techno nights. We always try to get Buzz (www.buzzlife.com) to book some techno, and they do it maybe 3 times a year (Hawtin just played a week ago). Several great techno djs and producers live in the area but they don't get booked locally. Bryan Zentz lives in Norfolk, VA (about 3 hours from DC) and they have their own little scene there. There are also couple crews in Philly who throw parties but nothing huge. But on a positive note I see more and more people learning/getting into Techno which is nice. I believe that Tronic Treatment (NYC) was the most important Techno night in the East Coast, but I've heard that Christian Smith is moving to Europe and they wont be doing that anymore either (correct me if I am wrong). So thats the news from east coast.

i think things here are ready to explode but need to be ignited in the major citites. I have no money to run events at the moment. but im sure if and when someone gives it a good push it will go.
The strong reactions i get here whenever i play indoors and outdoors gives me hope:))
the one thing that makes me laugh here is that when the night ends everyone goes home generally.....no arguments....hehehe

*apologies if this has been posted already but "the new guy" is bound to put a foot wrong sometime right? ;) *
Where I live, which is out in the boondocks of california, the scene used to be such a mad house of DJ's playing trance/house/jungle and other shit I don't even want to mention. So I finally got a couple of gigs, and the second I played my first record "HYDRO 9" the entire place was stunned to hear PROPER HARD/TRIBAL TECHNO. Then half way through the set, I dropped my 303 tracks, and the whole place went completely ape shit... No one has ever heard the hard underground acid techno sound in the area I live. Then the people with the soundsystems stopped throwing parties, and I haven't been able to get out and show the masses what techno is all about. But my next target is in the city, which is notorious for cheesy, progressive pretty shit trance... And once I leave my techno mark, I will be sure that everyone will be converted to the techno scene, and will definitally stay hard, and stay up forever

well londons not as bad as some have said
although it is mainly london residents who play on my scene , the music has been good and varied recently.
in fact you can get away with a lot more here than some other places that i play that are still locked into that time warp of acid tchno or die .
last weekend me and darc marc played final scratch at chemical warfare at the mass and i must admit to it being a really interesting night just for the fact that we had really new and unplayed tracks to play with.
marcs set was fantastic and i had a good time too.
most of all it went down well.
as far as more commercial events go don't forget l.garnier at the end every month and antiworlds teknoworld room is getting more diverse artsists in such as the youngsters , liebing and dave clark are coming soon.
i know you guys may have already seen them but the squat crowd haven't or the psy trancers so it'll be a fresh vibe for them and the crowd.
so far valentino has rocked it the most and everyone loved him.
sorry to read the u.s. posts.
i know how it is over there it's just so damn expensive to fly anyone from europe . but more than that kids are just so fickle over there. they don't hang in there and grow up with the music ( except a few of course)
i reckon it's the lack of good radio that's the problem there.
it's just hour upon hour of hip hop and rock. ( that's gotta hurt.)

Absolutely no techno scene at all! They tried a couple of bugged out nights featuring Green Velvet and Justin Robertson but the attendances were poor and it subsequently ended after 2 monthly events.
Ive lived in Liverpool though for the past 3 years and the techno scene has had its ups and downs. Voodoo was an amazing night when it was about, right up there with atomic jam as being the best techno night in the UK. Holds some great memorys.

Henry, I saw a couple of flyers here in Cali about a year or so back, and I really wanted to go, but it was a 21 and over type deal. Anyways, how did the people like/react to your sets? I had a friend who went to a party and you and I think Chris Liberator were playing, and he said you guys didn't even get half way through your set, then the crowd kinda just walked off the dance floor because they weren't used to the type of music EVERYONE else absolutely loves.
I think the US has a lot of catching up to do and people should really stop being so closed minded about music they never heard. Year after year the electronic scene has evolved to new directions, you'd think people in the states would embrace that change. But I guess only time can when the kids over here will stop being closed minded and realize that techno/acid techno has a lot of energy and if given the chance, could really change the scene over here.... I just hope I am not dreaming hehe ;)

Here in Dallas,Texas there are a few shows, but for the most part it is #1 House #2DnB #3 Trance/progressive. That's about it. You know it's bad when Dave Clarke only gets 40-50 people. The same for Misstress Barbara. There are no weeklies period. This past year there have only been 4 or 5 worthwhile shows. There are even people advertising themselves as "techno" DJs when they play hard progressive.
The only radio that plays techno in the US is college radio and then that's usually late at night when we are out anyways. If I ever do hear electronic music on commercial radio, it's usually Cher remixes and ilk like that. When I mention that I am into techno people often say stuff like "Wake up man, the rave scene has been dead for years." Lame.

Here in Northern California a lot of the kids who have been listening to "NRG" (Hard House) and trance for the past few years are starting to get stoked on the hard tribal techno sound. I would say that they aren't into the acid sound so much as driving tribal techno, which has energy like the NRG (hehe) but has a more developed and mature sound to it.

I would seriously like to meet the crowd of jerks who aren't into tribal techno, and have them shipped off to a remote island. Because anyone who is uptight and strictly into the progressive pretty shit/NRG sound which california is diggin' right now, makes me want to start an underground movement and teach those bastards that tribal techno/acid techno is a force to be reckoned with. Sorry if I sound like an asshole, but it's my day off and I've had a few too many beers hahaha :rambo:
But seriously, the only way to cause a mass music transition here in Cali, is to get every bedroom dj/underground tribal/acid techno dj together and leave a mark and impression on every kid who thinks they have heard everything. I have been to so many parties where every dj and every set sounds so similiar it's amazing no one has hired new acts to revamp the dance music scene. For **** sake, I envy everyone in the UK, because you guys are already in the loop, and know what I am talking about because every squat you goto, you get to hear DJ's play these amazing sets of techno. But I am going off on a tangent, so I think I'll finish this 12 pack and crank the new records I just got :bash:

well to expand on the LA techno scene a bit...
Droid Behavior in the past two years has certainly come a long way, lots of good parties with an intimate vibe (100-300 people), and a new record label with a couple releases out so far. Other LA labels include Automat, Global Trax, Hard Hat, Traxstars, and we'll be doing our first Heavy Industries records soon too. We have a few dedicated collectives trying to push techno in parties, releases, Internet, whatever... it's sure small considering the size of this city, but it also avoids a lot of mainstream interference that way too. All the DJs I've talked to who have played at techno parties out here have had great times. The techno crowd here is small but dedicated and supportive.
We have a monthly minimal techno night called Mixture which features people like Dan Bell, John Tejada, Magda, etc. and even the superclubs like Avalon and Spundae will occasionaly host the larger techno names like Beyer, Hawtin and Vath. So at least we have options out here - occasionaly - for where to see techno and who to see. Very rarely are there conflicting parties, actually the one party I threw out here back in February was the only time this happened (I had Geoff White & Tejada, they had Monolake, and one other guy had Liefhebber). So the good part about this is you are pretty much guaranteed to have no competition if you decided to do a techno event.
I see things getting bigger here over time - there is already some national recognition for Droid and the LA movement, well I should say "revival" cause techno used to be big here at one point in the 90s. It's really hard to get people interested again though because they already went through the crazy California rave years and are kinda burnt out on it. But it's fun because there are tons of talented 'newbies' out here just waiting to get exposed. I think LA will finally receive its place on the proverbial techno map in the months ahead.

PDT forgot to mention the acid tekno scene in melbourne - henry having been here nos its not much... and those who love it have no choice but to try and make it (**cheers to chris and collette**) the "commerical" scene dont take it the way we do, and the acid tekno djs that play at "Commercal" events dont play anywhere near as hard as they do to a crowd they no love acid tekno....... with virus gone and no more UPN parties..... shout out to itchy and krew for kicking on with 909.... coz in the end 909 is all the acid tekno melbourne has.....
IM MOVING TO LONDON!!!!
on top of that above gripe........ melbourne does pretty much cater for any taste of music.... im just a one eyed acid tekno punk!

There are several problems factoring into LA’s lack of techno...The main problem is (as NOS said) Cali peaked hard in the late 90's and its really crashed hard from it. Raves (weather Techno, House or Dnb) of 25k/30k people were almost every weekend... it was out of control. I was throwing 500 head underground techno parties in Venice every six weeks in 99' and I had to make it strictly invite only otherwise it would have melted down. (D.D.Drummer, you know the pad!!) However, more than any city I've been to in that time, LA's extacy use was out of control. Nobody saw the dark daze coming and in 2001-2002 night life hit the skids as the drug took its effects. It did not help that it also coincided with a work shortage as the entertainment industry hit the skids all around.
Overall LA has yet to really recover. Many of the old heads are still beat down or moved away. Myself I still prefer to be a hermit as well, although, its starting to well up inside me that its time to go back to my extroverted ways. LA being a transient city, new people are always coming though and who knows when the next up cycle will peak or if techno will even be a part of it. If it wants to be, it need to be innovative as people here really seek to be attached to new movements.
To go on the record.. Personally, I think the purist techno thing is done here. My prediction is that the next important wave will see breaks and techno colliding.

Good to see. I remember back in 1999/2000 when it was booming as well and it looked like Edinburgh would become a real techno stronghold. Then it kind of died away a little bit, I know a lot of people I used to see out and about got quite disillusioned with it all. Been hearing good reports over the last 18 months though!

I have a slightly diff opinion. People like Rich Hawtin and T Raumschmiere will always get a good response. I think the scene is healthy when the locals (palomo, vega, knee, apocolypse, etc..) get as good a response, and the crowd is there for the music rather than just the special occassion that can't be missed.
I'm new here, so maybe I'm jaded, but also, it's all clubland here. Besides smartbar and emptybottle its all about $10 drinks, bad lighting, etc. Not much of an underground scene. Also, to me, when a scene is healthy it lives for itself. Not just to catch a show like a movie, and then back to cubicle land.
But I grew up with the Detroit scene. An urban legend that lives up to it's status, so maybe I'm just a little spoiled, jaded, or a combination of both. FYI, it WAS a religious experience, just in case you're wondering! :P

900! Great stuff.
Nah, I lived in Edinburgh from 96-2000, moved down to London to go to uni and decided to stay down here. I can't remember the last techno night I went to in Edinburgh, possibly DJ Rush @Dogma in 2002. I've been back up a few times but got so many people to catch up with that checking out the clubs takes a back seat really. And now my folks have moved down to Somerset I don't know when I'll be back up next!
Got some great memories though, had some amazing nights at the likes of Apex, Pillbox, Resistance, Pure, Subtle Logic, Loop etc. Also the big free party out at Gullane in 2001, and all the quarry parties. The days of the third room in the Studios, there was some real messiness up there sometimes!

Yeah I can see why that'd be a pain, the Studios never had a load of space for chilling if need be. Especially when they changed the bar and seating area at the back, there was a lot more space before.

Haha, aye they were great eh? Techno booming out while people went up into the woods or looked out over the beach, drum & bass on the tennis courts...mental stuff, you'd see so many random people there as well who all turned out to know each other, that's what made them special.
and the quarrys are still going stong, but ther alot happening elsewher aswell now...
Good to hear!
3rd room in the studios???never knew it was ther..
Aye, when you come in you've got that bit to the left where you can get through to the main room, well if you turned left instead of right you followed a corridor round to a really narrow flight of steps. You went up those and there was a big chill-out area where people just sat on the floor, another set of decks to the right where they'd play all sorts, and a few stalls set up selling all sorts of random stuff. There was also the infamous big chair, haha
They closed it in 2001 I think, cos of the flats built opposite. Shame, there was a lot of randomness went on up there, those daft incidents that make a night ye know?
must be hidden now, ther just 2 upstairs down stairs....i cant see the studios lasting much longer, the fukers have benn building flats around it and now they have to limit the sound volume cos of complaints....its REALLY annoying-such a good club with a great vibe with shite sound...and ther building more flats i believe......
Aye, it's a great club. They've been saying for 3 or 4 years it'll be closing down but I guess now it looks like it might well do. Can't believe they limit the sound now, but I guess as it's been developed around it they don't have a choice. Part of the appeal was how remote it was, that's a real shame.
Damm, same at the venue, think that will only have anuther 5years left, then were do we go??

The scene in North wales is pritty good at the moment. Saying that it always has been. The welsh love techno!
The clubs are small and some are converted old barns having open fires in them!! (Hendra Hall) but the atmosphere is amazing!
There is Time/Amser in Bangor where MarkEG has played a fair few times. We had Adam Beyer n all a long time ago. (Think his production has gone soft at the mo!!)
Funk D'Void also played in Manipulate in Hendra Hall which was nice.
There are other nights held in areas such as swallow falls. The Tech Fest!
Zig Zags is a lil crusty party that goes on if you want to get totally distroyed and party for a few days!
its not too bad here in Wales for techno!
