Good question. They aren't as visible on the scene as their abilities should make them, although maybe that's a good thing as they don't seem to over produce. The guy that seems to be making the greatest headway recently from Japan is Takaaki Itoh.

i get a lot of his stuff on the fly, ( i dont go looking for it) but if you know the name of the track chech out www.gemm.com it's like a online record broker. You could do a search under speedy j. I will pm you a list of his recent stuff on monday (i am going away for the weekend) if you like, otherwise anything from around 1996 should be good. ;)

As for the Kanzleramt 10/100 release, my favourite is Heiko Laux's "K Tune", really really funky!

Drummer as Co-ax - Cant get enough from his distorted box.
Micheal Forshaw - Poineer to twist my skull.
Glenn Wilson - Highly innovating with his use of samples and arrangment, Daddy.
Marco Remus - Hard house alike techno but yet it's so punchy, my stomach turns.

I think it has to do with the music the producer listened to prior to producing. If they were an individual who grew up secluded to one style as a preference it's hard to translate that into all around talent. If you listened to a broad array of styles it projects in what you make.
Me I find I'll listen to Cannibal Ox, MadLib and Mf Doom and on the same cd the next track is by Slayer. I find no problem making a tribal techno track and from one day to the next making something a bit fierce. Most people would protest this move though. Purists are on the same vein as radical fundimentalists. For example I'm sure Glenn Wilson could make an awesome tribal breakbeat or even a house song. But that's not what people want from him, even if thats the mood he may be in. There needs to be more focus on the individual in techno rather than having them pump out what is expected.

Patrick Skoog - Huge amount of releases in 2003, the guy is on the roll...
Henry Cullen - I've knew that sooner or later he would progress into more pure sound, most of his acid releases had this pure techno edge - always my favorite - since the old Smitten days. Hydraulix 1 and 9 are a perfect example that this guy has a massive potential. ;)
These are the two that are really catching my attention at the moment. I love all driving and very energetic tracks, I'm not into blimpy or lulluby techno, shit that comes out on Blueprint etc... (no offense to Surgeon, Ruskin fans.)

You speak my mind bruvver. Pureists can really push a producer into a box, and effectively kill there creativity.
