how do u get them skatey shuffley hats like on raw and routemaster style tunes?
nice chugging locomotive style.
what are your tips etc.
eg. layers, velocities, reversals? fx patterns and use of open and closed hats and rides?
i have never quite been able to crack it! help me out im in the mood for making some acid techno

what sequencer are you using? most have groove templates. i use cubase for composition and it has a lot of lovely grooves.
also the swing on the 909 sequencer gives lovely skippy hats. they implemented the same swing into the d16 909 vst.
depending on the type of hats i want ill use closed, foot closed, chokes, open hats.
a good trick is to put a closed hat directly after an open hat but at a very low velocity, this chokes the open hat and when used tastefully can add a bit of something extra to the usual open hat sound.

im using ableton at the moment i'll give the d16 909 vst a try.
think i'll also dig out an example of exactly the sort of sound im trying to achieve and maybe someone will have an idea on how it was done

different loop length for different sounds, bit of shuffle here and there, subtle delay modulations, subtle reverb etc.

ok this is kind of an example of the kinda hats/shakers i want to learn how to do. love that sound.

add some snazzy delay work and route a couple of the different hat channels through the camel phat hi hat izolator for a lil crunch... thats a nice effect

If working with samples: All about using the Velocity in a nice way, shuffle/swing and proper delay. Also shifting some samples out of the time frame by a little works as well.
If you use stuff like D16 drum machines, same thing: dont just use the full accented tones, play with the 2nd and 1st degree of velocity changes.
Something I like to do to get my drums more dynamic & alive is to add a small velocity change to ALL hihats triggers over a period of the length of the track. Just real minor changes in volume, nothing major. The old real drum machines analog impulses are not static in the volume on any drum sound, so this is probably the best way you can copy that behavior.

yeah i found that layering several hats then offsetting them from the grid either slightly back or forward gives a nice effect.
here is the latest version of the track i still havent managed to finish off yet
