View Full Version : The BOA Guide To Real Hard Techno
MARK ANXIOUS
17-11-2010, 03:06 AM
There's alot of new artists for ppl to get their heads around in this new digital age :)
It'll be a great idea I think to post a thread where we can all say who some of the artists are that are really cutting it and a paragraph underneath about them.. Where their websites are, perhaps a pic,a small bio, a link.. etc...
Then we make a guide to it as a press release for the various worldwide hard copy magazines.....
But don't post your own shit here.. just post people you're willing to stand up and recommend... They must be prolific current.... OK perhaps you can put yourself but if anyone doesnt think it's right after it's been posted, let me know on info@markeg.com and I'll take it down!
Off the top of my head as of now, I would ask of you to put recommendations about
Virgil Enzinger
Luis Ruiz
Ritzi Lee
Reeko
Andreas Kremer
Oscar Mulero
Vegim
Oinks
Glenn Wilson
Mattias Friedel
Ryuji Takauchi
Mike Humphries
Machine Code
S-Tek
Andreas Florin
A Paul
Patrick DSP
Brad Lee
Concrete DJz
But I'm so sorry, there's TONNES i have missed out!!!
None of the tribal stuff, or schranz guys. Let's keep it to the hard techno thing...

There's a few on there I would have to strongly disagree with. Hard Techno? Nah, slow and derivative, yes.
Virgil Enzinger- yes. One of my favorites. Interesting moody Techno.
Andreas Kremer- a legend in everything he does be it hard or schranz or whatever. Good music.
Glenn and Mattias- Agreed. I love their stuff. It's off the beaten track for me but it works.
Ryuji and brad lee- savage. Same goes with Paddy DSP. Marvelous.
I can see that there are some that apply to the Hard Techno tag- but there are a lot there that I don't understand.
A Paul for instance. I don't get it. I find it formulaic. Build ups of white noise that go up and up and break with nothing. Let me just add that this is no dig. respect to him for doing his thing and I'm sure he's a nice chap. (he's Portuguese, they are lovely people)
There's a good few that haven't made your list for now. But there is some very very new talent waiting to break that deserve a mention here.
Darren Gale.
Little Fella/Ben Deviant.
Luke Downie/Oris.
SPR.
There's a good few more. The above are the stand outs for me- watch this space too ;-)

that list just proves that people's concept of hard techno is way off esp if were going by what they produce nowadays (not a dig)

Yeah, some of those names are historically harder techno, but their output nowadays has changed.
Ryuji Takeuchi's more recent stuff all sounds like the Dubfire remix of "Spastic" to me - white noise hisses and rolling snare drums. I definitely wouldn't call it hard techno.
+1 for Wetworks
Hoth System (solid relentless and well produced)

Wavemother
David Moleon
Axel Karakasis
Primus Tech
Thomas Krome made some good hard tech in his day :(
what you on about, speedy J is hard as ever for example.
if you try and work that you might even see that he is.
its 2010 ffs, we got tracktorz, abletonz and all sort of shizz to make the output artist provides a perfect whatever you want it genre (techno)
stop thinking backwards.
Recent stuff I heard is;
Rumenige
Loktibrada
and probably a whole host of other artists from Slovakia and Czech Republic
Inigo Kennedy (still occasionally does some harder tracks)
Riotbot
Max Walder
Those lot from Hungary are putting out some darker tracks (Doryk, etc.)
Leo Laker is still making stuff afaik
People like Takaakit Itoh were doing some really heavy shit earier on, but seemed to have calmed down massively :(
TBH, if I really had a scout there is probably still plenty of it out there, like what's been said on many threads, just too much minimal shit everywhere.

Eric Sneo - He may be a little melodramatic, but the man brings it.
Planetary Assault Systems - Seemed to fall off the map for a while, but back of late, and with a vengeance.
Radial - I think we can all agree here.
Anthony Child - He doesn't produce as much as he used to, but the quality is still there and definitely not glitch.
Veber
17-11-2010, 10:33 PM
A.Paul - i differ on above opinions.
and im a convert/soldier for a.paul. Find his work the only kind that exsists and represents proper hard techno. I've made a decision to produce just for his label only if he continues his philosophy.
Elvio Neto
17-11-2010, 11:02 PM
A.Paul is not new at all , i see him play live since 1993
is new stuff is boring i agree , but in the 90´s he was a bomb and used to have 3 labels
he have so many classic cd´s and releases in the 90´s just check is old stuff you guys will see the true A.Paul , but the new style he adopted is boring i agree (all old producers are actually with new styles)
its incredible how people know a few Portuguese artists like Ricardo (Industrialyzer) , Francisco Ferreira (The Advent) , Jose Miguel (Ze Mig L) and never heard about the A.Paul... he used to be the best of all in the old days (and was a reference in techno in all Iberic Peninsula Portugal/Spain)

Yeah, some of those names are historically harder techno, but their output nowadays has changed.
Truth. Many of us mentioned there changed direction and is changing it even more soon.
One guy I dig a lot when it comes to "harder Techno" is Luis Ruiz. Brilliant producer but I really like his all around work, chicago stuff, sci-fi inspired and detroit flavored beats. Worthwhile to check up all his stuff.

YouTube - Thomas Bangalter - What To Do (A3) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z9MnNgoUcs)
What the **** you guys.
Sorry to say, but some tribalish tech sounds these days trump what's considered "Hard" now.
Somewhere along the way the lines between "minimal" and "hard" got blurred.
I hear nothing but sheer warmth, on what's considered "hard" these days.
Call it "Warm" or "Deep" even intelligent, because the dudes that made it truly are, but "Hard"...
Remember this was hard...
YouTube - Ben Long "In The Nick Of Time" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dmvykL5UOE)
That track is warm as **** and trumps whats out now and considered hard.
I'm not being a naysayer and hating on any names mentioned, noticed I pointed no one out, but I just think Hard Techno is abbrasive, exciting, rhythm soaked, and just out right knarly, I want to grin and say **** yeah when I hear it, not smoke a cigarrette outside the club, and go oh, man, the space between those kicks, that guy nailed it.

"techno" artists who ring my bell these days are tony wetworks, pat dsp, jay wong, luke creed, sinistra to name a few.... classics i alwasy gravitate back to would be golden age surgeon stuff, old PVC/antidandruff, jay denham and millsy of course....

-1 Very nice stuff.
See problem here is people want what they want, most of the time they want the shit they heard when they were on their techno honeymoon, and if todays producers don't want to write over compressed, dirty, aggressive music then it sucks? This why your hard techno music is stagnant and the events total bad tempered sausage festivals. Most people either got old, tired, too ****ed up or moved on.
Come on someone post up some NEW hard techno like those Slovaks and the Tonal Path shit, theres nothing wrong imho with a bit of warmth and tension.

I do like a lot of modern Techno, but I also don't see it as being hard. That's the key word here - HARD. It is definitely Techno, and it is very nicely produced at that, but it isn't hard.
My Dad listens to Rhythm & Blues. He has always loved Blues; it is the music he really feels in his blood. So when he sees on TV that nowadays R&B means Destiny's Child, rather than Robert Johnson et al, do you think he should just say "Yeah, you're right, this is R&B. This is what R&B is these days, so I will blindly accept it because I am told that this is R&B, so it must be"? NO WAY! He still listens to the music he always loved, even if no fcker produces it any more, and he still knows that is the real R&B. He's not gonna accept some lightweight poppy bullsh*t as being R&B, cos he knows it is not.
You listen to Destiny's Child's music, and you can easily see it isn't real R&B. The B stands for Blues, and I don't hear ANY blues in their songs. It's all about how sexy they are, how independent and strong they are etc etc ad nauseum. So, if ya got no blues, how can you be R&B = Rhythm and Blues? Just like a lot of this music is techno but it isn't hard, so how can it be Hard Techno?!
Anyways, I think we are seeing a slow resurgence of real harder Techno, with labels like "We like it hard" springing up (and planning a new night at Tresor) and new releases coming out which, instead of pandering to the whole "minimal masquerading as techno" thing which has been going on for the last few years, are actually a genuine harder techno sound; such as the new Machine Code release from Dean Rodell. I think it's gonna be a while before we see a lot of artists making the real harder sounds again, but it is happening slowly, so watch this space...

I think it's gonna be a while before we see a lot of artists making the real harder sounds again, but it is happening slowly, so watch this space...
nicely put mate :)

Nothing wrong with the stuff you mentioned bro.
Fair play to your comment as well man.

seem like there's a few similarly disjointed tracks like this one. I only mentioned Max Walder because it seems Manu Kenton's solo stuff hasn't got the same heavyness to it, so I can only assume it's Mr Walder's contribution to the sound that's more in line with what I personally like.

With so many different personalities and people here, we were bound to get the ball rolling and kick off a discussion as to what defines or doesn't.
I think it's healthy to discuss and even disagree at times.
I don't think it's healthy to criticise people who are passionate about their stances. Healthy discussion and brainstorming never hurts. In fact this thread has just about inspired me to start a new label strictly for Hard Techno.

ah k, that's a bit clearer. I personally thought this thead was aimed at if someone came along without a clear understanding of what hard techno is and still thinking scooter make the best hard techno evar.
The stuff being posted from Youtube is pretty much the only way we can put examples of what people here view as hard techno, it's not a competition to show who knows what hard techno is and what hard techno isn't, because as I found in many cases it's really hard to put you finger on a genre.
And also as I've come to realise from this thread, I personally like that solid chicago stuff, but like most other people I've got an eclectic record collection and there's stuff I would of thought as not hard enough to play in a hard set, but I know now that it is because it's still driving and progressive and I've got the views of others to at least go by as a guide.
As for posting our own stuff, well you've just said a very good reason for that, the artists that did make stonking hard techno tunes don't anymore, they've seen the money and have followed that (I'm not a believer of the old excuse "we're searching for a new sound"). Where it's left a hoard of clubbers who have a history of getting mashed to 10+KW PA at some local asylum rinsing out the most abstract tribalistic beats till 8am. It's still frowned apon by a huge section of modern society in the UK, yet it's so similar to what the tribes slowly being wiped out by modern society do to celebrate their existance. I get more and more baffled by what is classed as progress.
I'll keep enjoying and producing stuff in this specific genre for a very long time, whilst everyone else changes taste and moves to other things. The combination of raw analog sound and intelligent sequencing you just don't hear in many other forms of music imho.

Right, that's my feeling exactly. I started to produce in the 90s, released my stuff early 2000 up till now and for over a decade I've done "hard" techno but also much other music but I felt I came to the point I'm fed up with it. My coming stuff will still be "hard" on some release but with a totally different direction.
I'm much more interested in tone, mood, dirt, emptiness, subtle movements and experimental thinking now, all of those things I rejected in much of my techno production before. Respect to those who can stay with what they've always done (even if it really boring from a production point of view) but thats just nothing for me.
It's called progression and developing of the style?!

Yeah, the emotiveness, that's music theory. I find if the sequence and tweaking are done live, the emotion is pretty much put in there as standard. I've personally always been into technical intricacies and instability, hopefully aiming to let the machines add their own character, I'm a fair way there, still quite a bit of R&D to do though.

You think much like me I can hear. I'm old school when it comes to production, I like to record and tweak everything live (though it takes layer recordings at times obviously) and like to program with step sequencing & pattern based writing just like how everything started. I'm not into drawing lines in Cubase to make music, I find its killing my inspiration and ideas pretty quick for example.
As my mate MITA says, TMMR is a good label and combines a bit of everything, theres some real solid releases on there.

Long live!
The Black Hearts Motorcycle Club
Always loved the sound of Subvoice's pressings, Youtube doesn't do it justice but this is a good track all the same.

Original of this and the Lost Recordings #1 album it's on is still one of the best things Steve Bicknell ever did IMHO. Bar that rather menacing thing he did on the B side of a Drum Club vinyl :)

Does Rush still make stuff like this?? Do want.

Rush has such a distinctive sound; really got his own character and vibe. Definitely appreciate! Slightly insane vocals sometimes, but the percussion is just so tight and heavy. Can't help but grin on the dancefloor!

Anyone like Logotech at all? He's kind of an up and comer and similar to Virgil Enzinger but I like some of his stuff here/there.
Label? Cus' christ I have more web presence than they do and that's saying something because of my artist/DJ name!

Yeah, but I can't help but see Rush as a Schranz version of Green Velvet. Was there some kind of movement in the Techno scene to start narrating over Techno? It's fine for a couple of tunes, but surely the whole point of Techno is the rhythm? Or are we talking Mr. Motivator here now :D
On the plus side I can't see any problem with releasing Hard Techno fitness videos. Although, I can't see them selling other than for cult status ;)

Rush a schranz version of Velvet?
Rush has been talking over his tracks since the early 90's dance mania records.
Him and Velvet are mates and have recorded together on quite a few Cajuals & Reliefs, just saying...

I would say that I do sometimes still make hard techno, but tbh I make a lot of different kinds of music.

Nope not on Soundcloud, did have stuff up on Myspace but got really pissed off with them breaking/bloating the website code, it seriously sucks now, so I left.
Tbh, I have my own webserver, so I should really upload stuff to that, it's just getting time atm. I've got a few system projects on the go which are taking up my time :/
