ie - i know its distorted , compressed , eq'd a bit etc but what type of distortion fx in cubase would produce this effect
im assuming its on a square wave by the hollow sound
any ideas

You're right about the square wave/distortion/compression. You should also experiment with different distortions and distortion settings - not all boxes/plugins are created equal. Izotope Trash gives a ton of options, and I think you should be able to get some decent sounds out of it, but I haven't had a chance to explore it enough yet. You should be able to get something good out of one of the default distortion fx that comes with Cubase SX (the one with the different EQ settings and distortion curves - can't remember what it's called). Try dropping a little mid-range out to make it even more hollow (if you can, do this on your distortion unit rather than just on your board eqs). There's some chorus on it as well. Play with the chorus settings until you've got a slightly widened sound, but don't let it break apart or your tweaking will sound like ass.
