Breakneck#4 – Back to the Big Guns
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Recovering from JANUARY’s BREAKNECK, VALVE & STAY UP FOREVER, Portmouth¹s Biggest Ever Drum & Bass and Techno Event, FEBRUARY saw a true master class from TRACE, J MAJIK, SDM & TRIPLE M, with seamless Techno Artistry from
STERLING MOSS).
For MARCH it¹s back to the Big Guns as we welcome the All Time Greats that are ZINC, MAMPI SWIFT and DYLAN.
Bad man of Techno LAWRIE IMMERSION takes over the back room with a 3 hr trip to the near distant future.
ROOM 1: DRUM & BASS
ZINC is the Super Sharp Shooter, Original Junglist.
Following the time honoured route of DJing the early Pirate Radio Stations, Resident for club night Desire (1992-95), getting into production with SWIFT in 1992 leading to the eight volumes Swift And Zinc on BIZZY B’s PROGRESSION LABEL.
His first solo release, the all time classic Jungle anthem Super Sharp Shooter (in 1995), changed bass lines forever, followed up by the equally huge 6 Million Ways. While playing out every weekend at all the legendary events, UK and world wide.
1996 saw his bootleg mix of THE FUGEES’ Ready Or Not. In these three tracks ZINC permanently redefined the Jungle sound, and made classics that always have been, and always will be part of the Drum & Bass soundscape, that always rock any dance floor, that have been constant favourites since first release.
Following this ZINC formed the mighty TRUE PLAYAZ label with PASCAL and DJ HYPE.
In 1997 TRUE PLAYAZ started a night at the renowned London Club The End. In 2000 they moved it to super club' Fabric and it is currently the clubs most successful night to date.
Continuing the shape the soundscapes, ZINC released 138 Trek on TRUE PLAYAZ in 2000. Intended as a down tempo bonus track on an EP. The attention he gained from this release, after it reached number 25 in the UK chart, encouraged him to continue working with different tempos, and saw him set up his own label BINGO BEATS to release non drum & bass music by himself and other artists.
Co Headlining we have a true pioneer, a man with a timeless vision, unaffected by passing trends, always ahead of the game.
MAMPI SWIFT, a big man musically and size wise.
Even back in the day, aged 13 year old, using his height to get into the early ENERGY rave heydays of FABIO & GROOVERIDER.
DJing and into producing since 1990, guided by VOYAGER’s engineering and experience, a hotbed of future talent, learning craftsman production skills alongside TRACE and TONIC.
In 1992 he started a 8 year residency with KOOL FM, alongside playing every club, every rave that mattered.
A bag full of releases on a host of labels including TRUE PLAYAZ, SUBURBAN BASS, SOUR and K POWER, led to the inevitable own label.
CHARGE, SWIFT¹s own label was founded in 1997, allowing complete creative control and innovation over his uniquely nasty, dirty, twisted sound. The sound he calls ‘Balanced Music’, lower less obvious bass lines, allowing dark and twisted layered sounds, pounding yet subtle.
He works completely alone on his productions, a man with a vision. After the huge success of his LP Mainframe he¹s currently testing out the dub plates, loaded with fresh future material.
His name comes from his fast and furious mixing skills. BREAKNECK will be treated to heavy dub plate pressure, the new sounds, from the master innovator.
DYLAN began way back in the Electro era, searching for sounds, hungrily evolving from Electro to Hip Hop to House and finally finding his lifetime focus in Drum & Bass. DYLAN played the London pirate radio scene with long time friend B KEY for years. His shows were legendary.
DYLAN turned his twisted mind to production , borrowing the money for his first studio set up from his Nan (who he¹s famously never paid back), and soon had some tracks complete - which they played to DANNY BREAKS. This lead to the debut releases of Kosmos, Tighten Up and Liquid Breaks. He has continued to produce killer after killer including the anthem Need You with
INK, The Inferno EP, Dominion and Penitentiary to name a few. Releasing on renown labels such as RENEGADE HARDWARE, OUTBREAK, CYCLON, MOVING SHADOW, DROPPIN¹ SCIENCE, ARCHITECTURE, JUICE, FUZE, MUSICA, BIOTIC, XXX and has collaborated with a slew of top producers in the scene as well as his own projects Faith in Chaos' alongside ROBYN CHAOS, and The Four Horsemen' together with LOXY, KEATON, and INK.
From his residency at the RENEGADE HARDWARE nights at The End, to across the U.S., South Africa, Europe, Puerto Rico and, of course, the U.K., Dylan's djing has been consistently crippling dance floors for years. His style ranges from demented darkness to ghetto funk, always retaining those trademark hard driving, solid beats. Forthcoming projects include releases for GOLDIE's Metalheadz, Timeless, and a continuing onslaught of discothèque destroyers for your listening pleasure.
Our Main Room Residents SDM and TRIPLE M continue to tear up dance floor. The BREAKNECK faithful know and love their technically perfect sets, encyclopaedic vinyl collections, energy and spark. Fresh from last month¹s raving success of 3 hours 4 deck mash up, more than ably filling in for RANDALL, and for many people playing the sets of the nights, (up against
dream sets by J MAJIK & TRACE).
Solo vocal duties ’pon the night fall with local hero MC FREESTYLE. The long term rave don who lets the music do the talking. Last month saw his finest BREAKNECK performance to date, you just know he’ll be on top form.
ROOM 2 TECHNO
From the earliest days of Underground Techno, LAWRIE IMMERSION has been a constant driving force. The IMMERSION SOUND SYSTEM, one of the original and most active London Squat sound systems. His ROUTEMASTER RECORDS label turning out classic tracks, pioneering what was to become Acid Techno. Producing seminal tracks including London Acid City, as LOCHI - a collaboration with CHRIS LIBERATOR.
His huge back catalogue of productions, remixes, collaborations with the whole 'who's who' of UK Techno shows a breadth of work, that far outspans the Acid Techno movement he helped invent.
High profile collaborative projects like KEKTEX with D.A.V.E. THE DRUMMER have constantly redefined and pushed forward the sound of UK Techno.
POUNDING GROOVES is the latest incarnation. Deep, streamlined, bruising, pounding, a distinct move away from the Acid sound, receiving huge critical and popular approval across the Electronic music community, (including the purists).
From the squats of Hackney, to the huge Brazilian festivals, to the European hard techno circuit, wherever techno is played, Lawrie's impact is there to be seen, as a DJ, a prolific producer, remixer and innovator.
No man, alive or dead has been more involved, at the highest level, and put more into what we now know as UK Techno.
Expect a deep, dark, POUNDING GROOVES set, an explosive 3 hr voyage into the unseen future of Techno music.
Opening the Techno room will be PAT.TRIX and ANIMATEK, founding residents of ACID PARK, the acid techno event that grew and spawned ANTIWORLD, one of the most successful new nights in years, bringing their harder underground style of Techno Trance to a wider audience. Their reps have grown with their nights, and they have played every UK techno event that matters.
The release of HYDRAULIX #15 saw PAT.TRIX collaborating with D.A.V.E THE DRUMMER, the first of many smashes awaiting release.
ANIMATEK has a number of tracks in production which are going to blast into the future.
Residents at TEKNOWORLD, bringing Techno back to the big stage with a sold out launch event at THE FRIDGE.
Playing a two hour back to back set you¹ll hear brilliant mixing, an amazing collection of true techno, and the kind of back 2 back intuition that comes from two techno pros at the top of the game.
This event will further refine the slick stylistic darkness, as we continue to push the now already legendary production to the next level Â* huge custom designed laser shows, original full-scale cinematic projections, over 40k of crystal sound, the country¹s most talented, innovative performers, uniquely commissioned uber-intelligent lighting, a barrage of cooling fans, private chill-out areas, original BREAKNECK© brand décor and free give-aways.
