Default Do you care how live a live pa is?

    Any thoughts?

Personally I don't really care how live it is so long as it's entertaining. I'm sure there is a grey area in the debate. Let's hear it!

pounding grooves played live for us last night,he was awesome btw  , and I was having a discussion with someone who was moaning that all the sequences were just running in cubase and then lawrie was tweaking the desk effects etc. but I don't really see how else you can do it. I mean you could improvise with ableton, but you're still just playing pre-recorded sequences - unless you were going to improvise tracks from scratch, which I don't think many producers would want to do live on stage...anyway it doesn't bother me personally - if it sounds good then I don't really care how it was reproduced, it's the end result that matters....In a band scenario it would be like saying 'this isn't very live, they've already written the songs...'

you know we've had this out before?
anyway i agree ....it's electronic music which means it's been programmed
and in order to get that hypnotic feel a sequencer needs to be involved meaning not everything will be played live by a human hand.
which is the whole bloody point of techno.
the idea is to amaze people by your understanding and use of complex technology in your music , which is becoming harder these days as everyone seems to be music savy now.
one thing though for me it has to be with the machines on stage , and no d.a.t. style sets , straight off the mixer warts an all.
    love your mum

hardware over software imo. too many party kids are growing up never seeing a a hardware pa.

laptops are just more elaborate djing. even with ableton and an edirol. its not like you are programming the beats on the spot. like with a 909 for example.

to each there own though. a laptop gives alot of opportunities gear doesnt have.

true - it didn't stop you replying though did it? which means you are officially as sad as me.......or something like that    anyway the only reason we're having this discussion is because a never ending stream of peeps say 'its not really live ' or 'its cheating' and having been involved in a live PA in the past i know what it involves, and frankly playing records is a walk in the park compared, yet in some circles commands more respect...

i really don't care what you do, as long as you are honest about it.

i often get asked to lend keyboards to big acts that come through town, and i am sick to death of dragging my babies down to the show for use as stage props. the last act i lent a keyboard to didn't even bother to plug it in, but they still jumped around behind it like a pair of goofs.

well when they played here this summer they missed their flight, causing them to show up near the end of the party they were supposed to be headlining, demanded $1000 USD more than originally agreed upon, and stunk up the place when they did play.

even the trance kiddies were disappointed.
