My mate got one the other day that is well good - almost like an Ipod, but minidisc so it has a line in you can record onto. The discs for it are 1gb a piece, and they're only about 6 or 7 quid. I think the whole setup, player, a few discs, usb lead and software to transfer mp3's to/from a computer, and a 3 year insurance plan, cost £100. Not bad at all I thought.

well then you are prob trying to play them on bust minidisk players.

minidisk - good for recording sets + hooking up a mike and finding some samples for yourself.

That player my friend got recently was one of those Sony Hi-MD things. They are really quite good, if I was going to buy a personal stereo type device I think thats what I would get. The gigabyte discs are definately adequate in terms of storage, but for me its the ability to record for hours and hours and hours that make them worth the money.

LinearPCM/1.4Mbps (more than cd/wav sample rate) and at this you get 1 hrs. 34 min on the 1gb disc.

i doubt that will be crap quality.

ive used the normal minidiscs on lp for yrs and it sounds totally fine...

but the new ones on HD-Standard will be better im sure.

i may try it through a scope at work at different sample rates and compare it with a wav.....but my ears dont notice the diff.......thats all that matters really tho.

you can doubt all you want bro, but a mini disc is CRAP quality. try using one for your masters and you will find out! the wave is SO INCONSISTENT when viewed on a spectragraph. a record will go smoothly up and down with round curves. a CD will go smoothly up and down with square curves. a mini disc will go up down and all over the place with no consistent curving. don't take my word for it. analyze the wave yourself and see. even the ear can tell the diference. listen to an MD and then a CD and if you still don't hear the tinny, flimsy quality of the MD compared to a dat or cd, then you should ask glenn for the number of that ears specialist.

...or recording the evil sounds of the crow who stares at me through my office window every day.

f*** it though...i should just use an old cassette recorder for that...the hiss and crackle will only intensify his crow-ish evil...

A portable mini disk recorder and mic is great for recording interesting sounds when out and about.
    Solitary by nature.
    Isolation is the gift.
Does anyone have courage to stand apart any more?

My mic is so sensitive it's ridiculous.... I gotta figure out a way to be able to attach it to my clothing without it picking up the sound of cloth of cloth rubbing.. or cloth on mic rubbing...

thats the mike. you need to make a wind shield for it. like those furry things the tv crew use.

The new Hi-md minidisk players can record at the same bit & sample rate as CD's.
