Or is the sound quality a little crappier after you export the audio file?
Everything seems brighter when you play it live rather than exporting
I'm debating buying an outboard cd recorder to record the live feed off Cubase. Am i nuts??

hmmm ... i think you are nuts m8 - i export things over and over again and it all sounds fine to me
jimmah!
Rendering ... should output if anything a more acurate and better sound (as it's not stressed by ral-time processing)!!!

is there some option you've changed in prefs that converts your files to something else by mistake. i'd check this if i were you.
are you running SX or an older version dude?

5.1
sounds like you are exporting to a lower sample rate
if you have to do this use the dither option that should help
but preferably keep it all at the sample rate in your arrangement.
tell you what though to prevent confusion
i wouldn't bother going above 44.1 unless you have something that'll record a finished master at a higher sample rate (ie not cd)
love your mum
If u r using audio (which is kinda obvious from yer question).. u can even benefit from exporting the audio mix down to 32 bit floating point 96 Khz... (if yer sound card can support it ... otherwise don't bother).. that is if u plan 2 further process it (in that case don't use dither)... at the very last stage master down to 44.1khz (for CD)... maybe 48 Khz (4 vinil)... 16 bits should b yer number (but some mastering houses/ mastering plants already take 24 bits and so)..
then again most humans won't know the difference between 44.1 -96khz..
