i find it sickening that iTunes get up to 3 times more than the srtist in some cases. i really like the idea of paying the artist directly for tunes, especially as im 95% digital these days. i think more artists should offer this service. i spoke to henry about it b4 in the acid section. i send artist a tenner through paypal, he send me a cd of a few tracks. no bullshit middleman to deal with.

Very interesting thread this Steve!

It certainly pinpoints that the there is alot to think about regarding the future of musicians and there welfare...

Really liked the Voluntary Collective Licensing idea and the RIAA radar, so that you can avoid paying out to the big corps...

You can bet your bottom dollar that the big corps are aware of this way of thinking, and will act accordingly to try to protect thier position....

Bought from itune once.
Never again. Quality is appaling.

Think Beatport take about 30% as well though, don't think itunes can be singled out for that.
What the general split between label and retailer?
Sucks that artists get three times less than itunes, but thats because the label ain't paying them much.

Artist/Label direct can only be a matter of time.

In practice, iTunes is already a voluntary contribution system -- all of their music is available on filesharing networks.

Hmmmm. Bit dodgy that one. Shops could also be considered voluntary contribution systems, because all their products could always be stolen from elsewhere.

When I get myself on a secure weekly income I plan on putting all my music online for free or the charge enough to cover bandwidth costs. Screw everything else

Unfortunately although free music is cool, I also think that artists have as much right to earn money as anyone else.
