The passives can be picked up for 99 quid new... great monitors. They won the 1995 AES awards in their catagory.
i have alesis M1 mk2 and they are fine, i think. maybe little too bottom heavy, so right after i bought them, i had to treat the room for them, but it's now good, so i cant say any bad.

Both are ok.
I think in terms of ear learning, you`ll get used to the sound of the KRK`s much more quickly.
I`ve found Alesis monitors difficult to learn properly, in a reasonable amount of time.
Solitary by nature.
Isolation is the gift.
Does anyone have courage to stand apart any more?

Well for 99 nicker... for folks on a budget i think they're a class bargain.
horses for courses.
i used alesis for years and loved them.. but when i swapped to mackies there is NO contest. heard a few krk's in my time and they sound great. i'd say get down to your local store and check both in action. then make up your mind on your gut instinct :)
