    I wouldnt say dont boost.

    Just dont boost too much, EQ plugins can be misleading because they can boost 12dB or more. So its tempting to boost that much, when in practical use its best to boost only a couple of dB

    Another tip - find a frequency to musical notes chart.
    That should help you to identify the frequencies you need to bring out certain harmonics within sounds
