    Default timing in percussion

hi, i was wondering if u guys got any tips on the timing of drums for a newbie. the percussion in most pro songs sound so 'perfectly placed' to me. but when i try shifting elements milliseconds back or forth the beat still sounds so stiff most of the time. what am i doing wrong? So u guys have some informal rules or something that i should keep in mind when programming drums?
