Hmm well im not really sure as everyone i talk to says different, to be honest i think its abit like football, people support different sides ie: AMD and INTEL.

I heard both companies are bringing out 64bit CPU's soon.

I think it's more of a "tech-geek" vs. "non-tech-geek" thing. The AMD processors and the motherboards that support them (and the chipsets that support them), almost always have BIOS settings and jumpers for overclocking the processor, perfermance timing the DDR memory or similar things. I go with AMD - simply because its more efficient as a processor and you can get more out of it for much less money, and the options for performance are really good. The new nForce2 chipset by nVidia is a great chip (been using it for about 3 weeks now), and coupled with nice board (Asus A7n8x) it provides lots of possiblilties, along with ide raid, and 3.2Ghz memory bus and other things I'm forgetting off the top of my head.
...and that\'s all I have to say about that.

    Default amd vs intel

i have heard that the pentium 4 (northwood) 0.13 micron 1.7 ghz will easily overclock to 3ghz . this can easily done with an overclocking board such as an Asus.

as the 1.7 chip is old now its very cheep to buy.

i dont know how true this is but it looks very attractive.

i did have my 1.2 celeron overclocked to 1.6 but i think it killed my m/b and ram!!!!!

so there is always a downside.

but they were both under warranty hehehe..

IMHO Intel's procs are far more reliable than AMD, though AMD has the speed advantage. If u are a game freak, then Ahtlon is the choice, if u do graphics / sound stuff, then Pentium has it.

    Though i still have a Cyrix 166 :)
