There is only ‘one.’
It has been more than 3 years since the newly voted International Ibiza Awards “Best Techno DJ in the World” has graced the decks in London. Last time, it was at Fabric in October of 2005 for the Spaniard Cristian Varela. Thanks to Summertime Global, Lost Souls and listed Productions, London now has ‘one.’ night to catch this shining star on Saturday, June 14th at Unit 7.
Much of the anticipation surrounding ‘one.’ is being generated by more than the award-winning artist Cristian Varela. Popular techno producers Misc. (live) and Perc are joined by local heavyweight Luciano Esse, Sounderground Records DJ’s Jordi Mas and Sonogama, and Chicago-grown techy head twister Mike Khoury. The Lost Souls crew will also be in high spirits as this night will be their record label launch party.
About the headliners
Cristian Varela
Considered by many as one of the greatest techno figures from within the Spanish borders, Cristian Varela was born into a family of theatre and performing artists. Cristian quickly developed the skills needed to become the great Spanish producer-DJ he is today having learned to play the piano at the early age of 9. The next eighteen years were spent composing while delving into the depths of dance music scene and gaining deep inspiration from the likes of Kraftwerk, Nitzerebb and Depeche Mode.
In 2000, together with good friend and artist, Marco Bailey, Cristian created the popular record label "Pornographic Recordings". Cristian’s has performed to massive crowds at festivals such as "I Love Techno" in Belgium, "Awakenings" in Holland, "Nature one" and "Liberty one" in Germany; playing in unison with some of the best such as Carl Cox, Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Dave Clarke and Green Velvet. From 2000, he has won back to back awards of best Techno DJ by Spain’s biggest dance magazine DJ, among countless others.
Misc.
Opposites attracting and elegantly obstinate, Misc. is best known for their defining style by producing bouncing bass-lines and vivid arrangements. The duo, comprised of Christopher Bleckmann and Hannes Wenner, continuously disrupts the stylistic chains of techno without breaking the dance floor during the eclectic techno live-act. While you can find Misc. tracks on Sender Records, these boys also produce under the moniker Niederflur on Richie Hawtin’s reputable M_nus record label.
Perc
No artist is rising faster than London’s Ali Wells aka Perc. The past 12 months have been serious for this techno talent and Perc Trax label boss. His recent releases on Chris Liebing’s CLR label and Perc Trax are just two more notches on his well worn belt. Key to Perc’s recent success was his releases on Kompakt, which found their way into the record boxes of Richie Hawtin, Luciano, Slam, and John Digweed. To cement his techno credentials, Ali’s EP on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode label made him the first non-Swedish artist to release on the label in 7 years and showed that he could produce to a standard equal to the world’s best. With gigs in Asia and across Europe already in his diary for 2008, best be sure to catch Perc before he takes off again!
You’ve seen them around town
Italian transplant and long-time friend of the Summertime Global boys, Luciano Esse has the honors of warming up the masses for Varela. Luciano has honed his trademark bass lines and groovy rhythms though numerous residencies and gigs across Europe – Space & Pacha (Ibiza), Fabric & The End (London), Amnesia (Milan), and Digweed’s Kiss 100 Radio Show to name a few. Keep your ears peeled his Esse’s latest release “Phone Bros” on Aytpical Farm (remixes by Mark Broom and Le Texier).
Sounderground Records has been listed in a "Top 10 of UK Labels to Watch in 2008” by Resident Advisor, an online magazine devoted to dance music and dance culture. Well chuffed to have been name checked alongside righteous labels such as Rekids, Border Community, Freerange and Simple. Jordi and Sonogram are billed to open.
Hosting the second room will be the Lost Souls crew celebrating the launch of the new record label Lost Souls Music. After doing business on London’s underground techno scene for the past 2 years, they have decided to expand their horizons. The first label release, Chemosphere, due out this summer highlights work by ‘one.’ headlining artists Misc. and Perc.
If you haven’t heard of Mike Khoury yet, then you probably haven’t been down to the new Saturday daytime techno party at Public Life -“Lost Souls: Techno Club”. When he’s not at home across the Pond playing alongside M_nus or Mobilee artists, this US-based listed resident has been tearing up the punters heads with his dark and funky techno stylin’. You’ve been warned.
Bound to be epic
The three promotions crews involved in ‘one.’ each bring a different touch to the party and the synergy will be nothing less than pure ridiculousness! Brilliantly, they have chosen the perfect venue for this top-notch line-up. Unit 7 has been compared to Berlin’s legendary Panorama Bar for being a “dark warehouse with killer sound system” by Resident Advisor. This party will surely be on the taste buds of the true local minimal and techno-heads. And with a pre-sale ticket only costing £10, this is a sure deal. The carry-on party is scheduled to directly follow for extended ‘one.’ fun!
