what technique/gear have you used and why is it better than the alternatives?

    hey man

if you have any friend who have final scratch or anything similar try and borrow it and record as much as you can. If you have to rely on using the vinyl preamps in a dj mixer they tend to colour the sound.

Basically you want the signal chain to be as short and clean as possible, using the best preamps you can, and use good quality needles and clean your records first. Bit of fairy liquid and warm water works wonders.

record 24bit Wav thru the best A/D converters you can afford. nice preamps + brickwall limiting with ceiling -0,02dB.
    then convert to 320kbos mp3.

Why would you need a mic pre amp?

    And brickwall limiting? why?

Most DAWs meters can miss some peaks so its best to peak at -3dBfs.
