    Default Reese Bass

    How do you guys get that lovely Reese bass sound for techno use.... not as crazy as the DNB guys like it, but more along the line of

    Well, I`ve been doing these kind of basses for years now, so I think I`ve got it down.
    Finding and sorting the sound is dead easy, multi oscillators, detune one or more of them, possibly pull back the filter attack for some wobble sweep in.
    The main problem is fitting these basslines into the track.

    If you listen to all those tracks you linked, you`ll notice the kicks are pretty weedy as they have been low cut to allow the bass to slip underneath it.

    Essentially you want the bass to sit just above or just below the kick, so EQ both appropriately.

    Adding some sidechain compression over the bass will also help keep things clean.

    To get a bigger kick AND big ass is a bit more problematic.

    Egenrally the best technique is to use 2 synths for the bass, one providing the sub, and then the other providing the gnarlyness. Sidechain the sub bass quite hard and leave the gnarly line mostly untouched. This should allow the pasage of bigger kicks.

    Another alternative to blend a huge bass and kick together is to band pass your sidechain compression so it only effects the lower frequencies of the bassline, say 150hz down, but leaves the top untouched.
    So it sounds like the bass is huge and unpumped, when in fact all the energy that could effect the kick is kept out of the way.

    I think this sound is a bit tired in techno now, but it`s fun to do none the less.

    Thanks. Good advice. I am going to try and create some tonight.

    Yeah the Mr Sliff stuff doesnt have a powerfull kick and the energy seems to be in the bass, but I like the way the DK8 sits above and the kick is powerfull still.

    that is a brilliant post nice 1 steve gunna have crack myself at that now for another project im doing .
