Apart from the torrent sites, i.e. Pirate Bay etc... you could do a lot worse than check out the free (and legal) VST Plugins thread at the top of this forum....Some really good stuff in there mate ;)

Most companies make full or nearly fully functioning demo's for trial for a certain period of time.
